Alan Titchmarsh taking precautions with health post-surgery as he gives update
Alan Titchmarsh is being more cautious with his knees after surgery and breaking his ankle, amid his long-term wife Alison’s concerns.
The gardener recently said he had turned down Strictly Come Dancing a number of times as his dancer wife doesn’t believe his joints would be able to cope with the gruelling hours on his feet.
In a statement issued to Express.co.uk, Alan, 74, said: “My knees are fine at the moment!
“I am just aware that I need to respect them and be gentle to them at the age of 74 – then hopefully they’ll last a while longer!”
The ex-Groundforce host underwent surgery on his knees back in 2018 after sustaining damage from his many years of bending down in the garden.

He told The Mirror: “I have had what is known as knee arthroscopy on both my knees and my surgeon did it to investigate the reason for my knee pain.
“While he was doing it he removed all my damaged tissue and cartilage – I had it all cleared out and they feel so much better.”
Alan went on to say his bad knees were the result “of a lot of kneeling over the years from gardening” but claimed he was back to being a spring chicken at the time.
Shortly after surgery, the presenter faced more health woes by breaking his ankle during lockdown.
Speaking to the Radio Times, he said he had managed to stay active by doing 26,000 steps a day and maintaining his garden, until he slipped on wet grass.

“I broke my ankle at the beginning of September,” he spilled. “I slipped on wet grass and was on crutches for six weeks.”
Following his accident, Alan said he was “very cross” that the weight he had initially lost piled back on.
“It was very frustrating because you can’t even carry a cup of tea,” he added.
“I found having to rely on somebody else doing absolutely everything for me really hard.
“I’m not a terribly good patient; I don’t do ill.”
At the time aged 71, Alan also said he knew he had to start “slowing down” but wanted to “wear out than rust”.
His busy workload, he added, had caused his wife to worry about his health which prompted him to stay at home more.
With this reason, Alan has turned down Strictly on six occasions.
He explained to Saga Exceptional: “Alison was a dance tutor and she is convinced my knees wouldn’t stay the course.
“On top of that, it is a huge commitment; you start in September and you might be there until Christmas.
“There’s too much other stuff I need to be getting on with.”
