Singer John Legend, 41, left fans in tears at the Billboard Music Awards 2020 as he appeared on stage to sing an emotional rendition of his already emotional song, Never Break. The songwriter dedicated the “beautiful” tribute to his wife Chrissy Teigen, who broke the tragic news at the beginning of the month that their third child Jack, had died.

While introducing the artist, host Kelly Clarkson sent her love to the family at this tough time.

“He and Chrissy just have this warm way of inviting us into their world, the highs and the lows,” she said.

“Our hearts go out to you both in this very difficult time and I’m thankful that you continue to share your light and your talent with all of us for the very special performance, possibly my favourite of the night,” she said.

“This is ‘Never Break’ with John Legend.”

John began: “This is for Chrissy,” before he started to sing the track that has never been more timely of his own life.

He sang the lyrics: “We will never break, built on a foundation strong enough to stay.

“We will never break, as the water rises and the mountains shake, our love will remain.”

Fans took to Twitter during the performance to share their sorrow as they continued to send their prayers and love to the grieving couple.

“I am sobbing!” one cried.

“So sweet,” said another.

“I love them so much, that was sooo beautiful!!!” a third gushed.

“John is such a sweetheart for that, that was amazing. Prayers for him and Chrissy,” a fourth typed.

A fifth commented: “I’m a mess after that!!! John that was so beautiful.”

This is the first time the R&B artist has performed since the loss of his son.

The pair already share four-year-old daughter Luna, and two-year-old son Miles, but Chrissy had been hospitalised for “excessive bleeding” with their second son.

In a series of undeniably heart-wrenching social media posts, the power couple gave a raw insight into their suffering, as they shared photos straight from the hospital ward.

She captioned the harrowing Instagram posts: “We are shocked and in the kind of deep pain you only hear about, the kind of pain we’ve never felt before.

“We were never able to stop the bleeding and give our baby the fluids he needed, despite bags and bags of blood transfusions. It just wasn’t enough,” she wrote.

“We never decide on our babies’ names until the last possible moment after they’re born, just before we leave the hospital. But we, for some reason, had started to call this little guy in my belly Jack. So he will always be Jack to us. Jack worked so hard to be a part of our little family, and he will be, forever,” she continued.

“To our Jack – I’m so sorry that the first few moments of your life were met with so many complications, that we couldn’t give you the home you needed to survive. We will always love you.”
