Carol Vorderman reveals heartwarming literary meaning behind her name

Carol Vorderman revealed the festive meaning behind her first name on This Morning on Friday.

The presenter, 61, returned to the show with financial broadcaster Matthew Wright, as the pair broke down the news headlines of the day with co-hosts Dermot O’Leary and Alison Hammond.

Conversation turned to the upcoming postal strike ahead of the festive holidays, grabbing main headlines everywhere.

Carol gave her opinion on the strike as she shared how Christmas is usually a hectic time of the year for her, what with her birthday being the day before, and admitted she often leaves Christmas shopping up until the last minute.

This was the moment the Countdown star disclosed the meaning of her name, saying: “I'll tell you why it is, it's because I was born on Christmas Eve, so I was named after A Christmas Carol so it’s always a mad time of year for me.

“Everyone says because your birthday's at Christmas we're gonna buy you an extra big present but they never do.”

Shocked by the revelation, Alison, 47, replied: “That is so interesting! I will never forget your birthday again, Carol. The Christmas Carol.”

This week, Carol shared with followers that her college in Cambridge had been named after her in her honour.

Carol uploaded a video of her visiting Sidney Sussex College at the university where she attended in the 1970s, as the sign of her name was unveiled above the door of the college.

She captioned beside the clip: “SIDNEY SUSSEX COLLEGE, UNIVERSITY OF CAMBRIDGE

“THE CAROL VORDERMAN BUTTERY. This weekend I was honoured to have a part of my college named after me. The buttery is one of the traditional parts of dining in college. I love my old college, and here is why.

“I went to Cambridge University in the 1970s when kids like me, from Northern/North Wales comprehensive schools on free school meals, never got to Cambridge. You had to sit a special exam in those days called the Oxbridge exam, and all the private schools had teachers who knew how to train you. I didn’t.”

Carol continued: “Our school in Rhyl couldn’t even let me take the two Maths A levels usually necessary to get to Cambridge (in addition to all of the other subjects you needed), such were the restrictions.

“But my college @SidneySussexCollege invested in me and said I could go on a conditional A level offer instead. I got the grades. So in 1978, I went there when I was only 17 years old, and eventually graduated with an Engineering degree.”

Carol signed off by thanking those who had a part in her Cambridge acceptance and journey.
