Actors Emily Blunt, 39, and John Krasinski, 43, are beloved in the UK and abroad for their roles in classics like The Devil Wears Prada or the US version of The Office. However, the couple once admitted John wasn’t always that welcome in the UK, as Emily revealed the one Americanism that often meant he got the cold shoulder in Britain.
In an unearthed interview from the Graham Norton Show, the BBC host once asked Emily’s husband if the English “needed to apologise” for “not being welcome” when he first arrived in the UK.
Reflecting on her husband’s attire when he first arrived in Britain, Emily said: “I did encourage him that he would be more welcome if he stopped wearing a baseball cap.
“I just said, ‘You look so American! Nobody wears baseball caps,” she added, as John protested that this seemed unfair.
Emily then argued that she just wanted him to “blend in more”, while John joked that he was a victim of “prejudice”.
However, Emily went on to reveal that John did attempt to make more of an effort with his outfit choice.
“He went out and he bought himself a tweed flat cap and he looked awesome, like something out of a Guy Richie film,” she told Graham.
“And he walked down the street and it was like the sun came out, because suddenly a guy turned to him and he went, ‘Alright?’” Emily added, as the audience laughed.
During the show, John confirmed that, while “most people are so welcoming”, customs agents at UK airports were “not so much”.
John went on to explain that, while Emily was shooting in Britain, he was shooting a different project in Montreal, Canada, so he would fly back and forth to see his wife and children.
John and Emily got married in 2010 and share two daughters: Hazel, eight, and Violet, six.
The Office actor told Graham: “I remember going through customs and everything was fine, but then one week I got unlucky and I got a guy that seemed about my age. He seemed a bit grumpy.
“He said, ‘You an actor? What do I know you from?’ And I said, ‘I mean, I don’t know if you’d know but we did an American version of the British Office.’

“Strike one!” John declared, pulling a stoney face and imitating the customs agent, “‘Oh, I love that show. The UK version.’ I was like, ‘I get it’.”
John then went on to recall how he had been asked who he was visiting, and that he told the man he was visiting his wife.
After the airport worker asked if John’s wife was an actress and whether he “would know her from anything”, John told him that he wasn’t sure.
However, the A Quiet Place director revealed the tables quickly turned when he revealed his wife’s identity.
“Then he asked, ‘What’s her name?’,” John remembered. “And I said, ‘Emily Blunt’ as he was writing something…
And he went, “‘You?!’ John yelled, looking up dramatically, “‘You?!’ And I tell him yeah, so he goes, ‘Alright, get out of here!’ He stamped my passport with fury.”
John is best known for playing Jim Halpert in The Office (US version), which he starred in between 2005 and 2013.
In more recent years, John has co-starred with his wife Emily in the A Quiet Place horror franchise, which saw him make his debut as a mainstream film director in 2018.
