Emmerdales Ryan Hawley shares emotional plea after best friend’s death

FormerEmmerdalestarRyan Hawley, best known for his role as Robert Sugden in the popular ITV soap, has shared an emotional plea following the death of his best friend.

The actor, 37, has announced that he will be running the London Marathon in honour of his best friend, Nick, who passed away aged just 34 in November 2020 after a five year battle with brain cancer.

Ryan is raising funds for the St Peter and St James hospice, which took care of Nick, and his family, during the final years of his life.

The former soap star will be joined by Nick’s wife Victoria and two other friends in a bid to raise vital funds for the hospice.

Sharing his emotional plea with fans, Ryan shared a link to his fundraising page where he shared Nick’s story and some pictures of his late friend.

He wrote “This is Nick – My best friend! In 2015, at the age of 29, he was diagnosed with a brain tumour.

“He spent the next 5 years battling the disease whilst simultaneously getting the most out of his life, even as his condition worsened. He married the love of his life and became a Dad to his beloved twin girls.

“Early in 2020, Nick’s diagnosis became terminal and sadly he passed away that November at the age of 34.”

The 37 year old then went to discuss his close friendship with Nick, describing his friend as like a brother to him, adding that he was: “Loyal, intelligent, patient, compassionate, a fierce competitor and very, very funny.”

The soap star continued: “We did everything together growing up: same classes at school, played in the same football team, traveled wherever we could, made fun of each other a lot and were even best men at each other's weddings.

“Now I, along with his incredible wife Victoria, and 2 other friends are attempting to raise money for the hospice that provided Nick and his family with care and comfort at the end of his fight.

“So, we are running the London Marathon – something that Nick had been preparing for before the pandemic and his subsequent decline in health.

“It would mean the world to me to be able to show my appreciation to this Hospice that cared for my friend and family when he needed it most!”

Ryan previously starred as fan favourite character Robert Sugden, until quitting the show in 2019.

His character was married to Aaron Dingle, played by Danny Miller, with viewers loving their relationship and affectionately calling them RobRon.

He made a return to the small screen last year, appearing in an episode of the BBC drama Silent Witness.
