Gogglebox returned to Channel 4 in Friday’s episode as they paid tribute to the Duke of Edinburgh, who sadly died last Friday aged 99. The regular cast took the opportunity to offer their thoughts as they watched the BBC coverage after it was announced that Prince Philip had died peacefully in his sleep.
But viewers were quick to take to social media and confessed they had been left slightly bewildered as the Gogglebox cast members reacted to the news of his death.
People were quick to question the network about filming the cast just as the news of his death broke as viewers did not appear convinced.
Viewers shared their thoughts over the reaction by the Gogglebox cast on Twitter.
It comes as mourners will gather over the weekend as the Duke of Edinburgh is laid to rest on Saturday.
One person said: “All of them were sat watching BBC1 on Friday at midday, were they? OK, hun.”
Another commented: “Please don’t insult our intelligence and make out everyone on Gogglebox just happened to be watching BBC when the news broke about Prince Philip.”
A third person claimed: “Everyone pretending that they’ve just found out about Prince Philip there and then #Gogglebox.”
“I learned about the death of Prince Philip while filming #Gogglebox,” a fourth said.
A fifth person added: “Everyone on Gogglebox acting as if they didn’t already know Prince Phillip had passed away.”
According to the Radio Times, the Gogglebox cast film two days a week and editing begins on a Tuesday, with the final cut turning up at Channel 4 on the Thursday – if everything goes to plan – and the show being transmitted on the Friday.
During tonight’s episode, the show cut into a breaking news report where the BBC announced Prince Philip’s death.
