Grammy Awards blunder as show airs red carpet moment not meant for TV

Australia's Channel Nine's Today show suffered a cringe-worthy on-screen blunder yesterday during its coverage of the 65th Annual Grammy Awards after accidentally airing a clip of the red carpet's "card girl".

The daytime TV show screened a live feed from the ceremony taking place at Los Angeles' Crypto.com arena on Sunday afternoon, leaving presenters Karl Stefanovic and Sarah Abo forced to tease the arrival of the world's most famous stars.

The livestreamed footage showed an assistant standing on the lavish red carpet, amusingly holding up placards with the names of some of the show's lesser-known celebrities, helping photographers identify who is who amongst the bustle of the event.

The hilarious footage – which traditionally goes unaired to create a seamlessly A-list affect – showed an extremely casually dressed chaperone holding up a white A4 sheet of paper for a handful of seconds whilst the apparently unrecognisable talent walks by.

Amongst those being papped whilst the embarrassing footage of the "card girl" aired were country musician Bill Anderson and singer Madison Cunningham.

It is understood in the entertainment industry that lesser-known guests require such identification, with such a broad range of stars attending the eagerly-anticipated annual ceremony, whilst the 'A-listers' do not need an introduction.

Extracts of the "card girl" and other such clips of assistants and producers is usually edited out of red carpet footage, but it appears as though the Aussie showmakers simply opted to use the Grammys live feed, perhaps due to a lack of post-production time.

It comes as the 2023 awards saw South-African comedian Trevor Noah host the much-loved show for a third year in a row.

Amongst the biggest winners this year were Adele, Lizzo, Kendrick Lamar, Willie Nelson and Dave Chapelle.

Beyoncé made history by breaking the record for the all-time wins – having been nominated in nine categories this year and accumulating 32 Grammy awards in total.

And doing it for the Brits this year were Harry Styles, who walked away with three awards, Sam Smith, who nabbed Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for their 2022 hit, Unholy, and metal singer Ozzy Osbourne, who bagged two accolades.

A plethora of huge names in music also hit the stage to perform some of 2022/23's most successful hits, with Jay-Z, Stevie Wonder, Bad Bunny, Mary J. Blige, Brandi Carlile, Luke Combs and Kim Petras all getting audiences on their feet.
