I'm A Celeb's Scarlette Douglas was awoken by snake during the night
EXCLUSIVE I’m A Celeb’s Scarlette Douglas reveals what it’s REALLY like to sleep with venomous snakes in the jungle camp
This year’s campmates are two weeks into jungle life and the latest series of I’m A Celebrity is already promising to be one of the most dramatic of all time.
With both Jamie Lynn Spears and Grace Dent calling quits on their time Down Under, heated debates and tense exchanges between Nella Rose, Nigel Farage and Fred Sirieix there hasn’t been a dull moment in the camp.
But what happens in the moments that viewers don’t see when the celebrities are going about their daily lives in camp?
Speaking exclusively to MailOnline from Tombola’s critter challenge event, last year’s campmate Scarlette Douglas revealed what it is really like living in the camp among all the spiders and dangerous snakes.
The TV star revealed that you are often closer to venomous than you think as she recounted how she woke up to a snake hissing while she lay sleeping in her hammock.

The former Place In The Sun host was thrust straight into jungle life when she was awoken on her very first night in camp with someone shouting ‘Snake! Snake!’
She told MailOnline: ‘I woke up like “what’s going on?” and there were these two rangers coming in.’
The television star then explained how rangers are always on hand to protect the stars from anything untoward.
She added: ‘So rangers will come out if anything dangerous comes into camp, and we’re told to step back so that rangers can come in, take them out and get rid of them.
‘So I see these two rangers come in and, you don’t see this on the show so everyone just thinks “Oh she just saw a little snake and she rolled everyone back to sleep”.
‘But before that the two rangers came in and they have a kind of T shaped bar. So they would try and pick up the snake.’
Explaining their game plan she continued: ‘And what they [the rangers] do, I then found out afterwards, is they will lift a snake up and freeze.
‘The snake will then think that it’s a tree or something, so it will freeze itself and because it stiffens, they can then drop it into a bag, take it away and go.’

Yet it seemed on this particular occasion, this snake was prepared to put up a fight.
Scarlette said: ‘They tried to do this about three or four times, and they look scared of the snake. I’m like, “It’s not even that big of a snake just get it in the bag or I’ll wake up and do it, whatever.”
‘Eventually the snake, I’m in my hammock, and I can hear it hissing loudly.
‘It’s coming towards me a lot quicker because they keep dropping it and obviously it’s aggravated. They quickly get it, put it in the bag, take it out.
‘And then I found out the next day it was a red belly snake, which apparently is venomous.’
Scarlette assured that the team are equipped with the necessary medicines to treat any contestants in the unlikely event they are bitten.
‘They had the anti venom there, though if I was to be bitten I would have been fine.’
After leaving the jungle, Scarlette then I did Soccer Aid where she met one of the producer’s from I’m A Celeb.
‘He told me that at the VIP camp the night before, and the night before the night before I think they saw two or three big death Adders.
‘So there were a lot of crew around there because they were scared in case the death adders came back in because I think they would have just had us real quick.
‘But you are safe in there. I’ve never heard of anything happen that’s super bad to anybody and thank God I’m still here to tell the tale.’

On why she got involved in the Tombola event, Scarlette said: ‘First of all, since being on the show, I love anything about that programme. I’m watching it at the moment as well.
‘The [Tombola] game seemed like quite a cool game so it’s been nice to actually be here and physically play it.
‘As much as Tombola is a betting company they do do a lot of stuff to make sure that people are aware of what could happen when they’re gambling.
‘I think that in itself is great as well, because not only are they trying to get rid of another platform, also trying to want to make sure that people are safe’.
