ITV Love Island’s Sammy Root teases career change after Jess Harding split
Love Island 2023 winner Sammy Root has hinted at a major career shift following his split from Jess Harding, shortly after the pair won the show.
The 22 year old heartthrob revealed he's keen to return to boxing "properly" in the New Year.
Speaking to The Mirror, he said: "I don't specifically do New Year's resolutions. I'm quite strict with myself throughout the year with my fitness and stuff.
"To be fair, next year, I've always boxed my whole life and I really do want to get back into that. I think my New Year's resolution is to really focus on my boxing and get back to that properly. If I had one, it would be that."
Despite his boxing ambitions, Sammy confessed he's not ruling out more reality TV stints.
He added: "Love Island was literally the best experience of my life and I had a lot of fun on there. I actually enjoy being on TV, it's a laugh, I like to watch myself. You know what, I'd never say never. I definitely would consider doing another show."
Sharing his "Bucket List" shows Sammy added that he'd love to do I'm A Celebrity or Dancing on Ice, which he says would be a dream come true.
During his time in the villa, Sammy was coupled up with Jess Harding, with the pair going on to win the show.
However, they split just two months after this – which Sammy had described as "total shock" at the time, revealing that he found out via the media.
Since his split from Jess, Sammy has opened up to OK!, telling us: "It was hard at first – that's an understatement.
"When you've got so many people invested in your relationship and you're doing it so publicly, it's a bit mad. But I've got amazing friends and family and I'm so privileged to be in this position, so I feel like I can't waste it and be stuck on one thing."
He continued pragmatically: "I can't change it [the breakup]. I'd rather just move on and wish all the best for Jess, and make the most of what I can for myself."
Speaking about the 'shock' of finding out in the media that he and Jess had officially split, Sammy said: "There was a period of about a week or so that we were talking on and off, and it was kind of just one of those things."
