Katie Piper has shared her horror with fans after discovering her daughter’s pet hamster Digit was eaten alive by her cage-mate Lala.

The 37 year old, who has daughters Belle, six, and three year old Penelope with husband Richard Sutton, made the shocking discovery while she was searching the pet’s cage on Monday 11 January.

Katie shared a video of her and husband Richard Sutton revealing their suspicions the hamster may have passed away as they checked on the two rodents, Digit and Lala, before going to bed.

In the clip, posted to her Instagram story, Katie faced the camera to herself and explained: “So we are just about to go to bed and we think we’ve made a bit of a grim discovery don't we?”

Richard replied: “Yeah.” The TV personality then asked her hubby: “What do you think has happened?”

To which her husband said: “I think one of our little companions, hamsters, has died I think. But, we’ve gotta investigate.”

Katie, who recently hit back at a cruel troll who called her ugly after her eye operation, then added: “So, basically, obviously they are nocturnal so they should both be out by now. We just shake the packet of food they like and they normally come running out and only one came.

“So we’re about to take the surviving one out and search through the sawdust.”

Richard then added: “Let’s have a little butchers” before she said: “OK,” and turned to the camera to say: “Wish us luck!”

Katie then filmed the one remaining hamster and added Celine Dion’s All By Myself on top, before she had discovered how Digit had met its fate.

Mum-of- two Katie, who recently admitted lockdown made her excited for another baby, then updated fans as she filmed herself once again.

On top of the clip she wrote: “We are shocked” before she explained: “It’s slightly worse than we thought. Belle’s hamster is dead and we have found his remains because the other hamster has eaten him.

“Just Googled it and apparently that’s a thing. They’re not vegetarians, they’re cannibals.”

She then turned the camera to hubby Richard who paused and simply said: “Gutted. Gutted.”

Katie then sought advice from her 989,000 followers as she wrote in another post: “Sorry I know there are far more serious things going on in the world but we were not expecting that

“Has anyone else experienced this?” She then added: “We are going to have to tell the kids and edited version of events.

“We bought them from a reputable per shop. They are same sex and dwarf hamsters. We were told they should be kept together as a pair and they always seemed to get on” followed by a crying emoji.

She then asked: “Is it common for hamster to eat each other?” before adding a poll.

Katie later shared an update with fans in a separate Instagram story post as she wrote: “Lots of DMs asking for hamster gate update.

“Have put the hamster remains (fur and bones) in a Jo Malone box in the garage. My husband goes to work still and I home schooling alone so am not going to tell Belle until the evening time. [sic]

“Going with the line of he passed away in his sleep due to old age rather than his best friend murdered and ate him. Then will give her option to bury box in garden.”
