Rapper Lil Wayne has been hit with a federal weapons charge in connection with a December 2019 plane search in Florida.
According to TMZ, the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Florida has charged Weezy with one count of possession of a firearm and ammunition by a convicted felon.
Acting on “a tip about weapons and marijuana,” the Miami-Dade police searched a private plane at Miami-Opa Locka Executive Airport in Florida in 2019 and allegedly found the rapper possessing a handgun.
“[Lil Wayne] is charged with possessing a gold-plated handgun in his luggage on a private plane,” his attorney Howard Srebnick said in a statement to Complex, adding that there is “no allegation that he is a dangerous person.”
“The charge is that because he was convicted of a felony in the past, he is prohibited from possessing a firearm,” Srebnick said.
Wayne was earlier convicted of a felony gun charge in New York in 2009. If he is convicted again, it could result in a 10-year prison sentence. The rapper will be appearing in court sometime in December.
