Monty Don shares Gardeners World update after death of beloved dog
Gardeners’ World presenter Monty Don has given an update on his progress after the death of his beloved dog, Nell, left him devastated.
The TV gardening expert recently revealed that the pup died of cancer three years after he lost his Golden Retriever Nigel. However, he’s now back to work on the BBC programme as he continues to grieve.
The 68-year-old horticulturist took to Instagram to share a post of himself with his team grabbing a tea break during filming. He captioned the snap, which showed him standing and facing the camera as the crew sat around an outdoor table: “Tea break filming Gardeners World today.
“It has become a ritual to have 10 minutes about 4 ish for a cup of tea in the bus shelter in the Paradise garden. A well- earned break for a brilliant team doing a brilliant job.” (sic)
Monty, who is known for regularly featuring his dogs on the BBC show and sharing snaps of them on social media, told his 1.2 million Instagram fans last week that he was “very, very sad” following Nell’s death.

He wrote: “[Nell] was diagnosed with cancer in June and every day this summer has been a gift but it is over now.
“We buried her in the garden next to Nigel wrapped in one of my jackets with flowers, balls and her favourite biscuits. Her end was peaceful and dignified and ended obvious suffering but it never gets any easier to bear.
He concluded: “So life goes on, but for the moment we are very, very sad.”
For the past week, Monty has been posting photos of his beloved Nell as well as his other dogs: Ned, another Golden Retriever, and Yorkshire Terrier Patti.

In one post to his 1.2 million Instagram followers, many of whom have filled his comment section with well wishes, he wrote: “Thank you for all your kind messages about Nellie.
“Today I shall plant primroses on her grave and take Ned for a long walk in the flood. She is gone but the love remains.”
The dog lover has long shared his deep fondness for the animals. In 2016 he released the book, My Family and Other Dogs about why he shows the pets on Gardeners World.
In an extract from the book, Don said of pup Nigel, who died in 2020: “Nigel has the rare gift of taking our love and making us feel enriched and enlarged by doing so.
“It is not what he gives back to us so much as what he allows us to give to him. He empowers us to feel love. That’s Nigel’s very special gift.”
