Phillip Schofield apologises to wife Stephanie for being unfaithful during affair

Phillip Schofield has publicly apologised to his ex-wife Stephanie Lowe, after admitting to having an affair with a young male runner on This Morning whilst they were still married.

The 61 year old came out as gay in early 2020 with the support of his wife of 27 years, Stephanie, with whom he shares two daughters.

A week after stepping down from presenting duties on This Morning "with immediate effect" Phillip made a lengthy statement to MailOnline, in which he admitted to having an "on-off" consensual relationship with a male runner during his time on This Morning, which he said was "not wise but not illegal".

In the statement, Phillip said that he was "painfully conscious" of lying about the affair to his employers at ITV, his colleagues and friends, agents, the public and "most importantly of all" his family.

He said: "I am so very, very sorry, as I am for having been unfaithful to my wife."

Speaking about the affair, Phillip said that he met the man in question "when he was a teenager", and wanted help to get onto television.

Phillip then said: "It was only after he started to work on the show that it became more than just a friendship. That relationship was unwise, but not illegal. It is now over."

Stephanie stood by Phillip in 2020, when he came out as gay on This Morning.

At the time, she said: "We have had to face the most emotionally painful time in our 27 years of marriage.

"I love Phillip, as much today as I ever have, and always will."

During Phillip's lengthy statement to MailOnline, he apologised for having "lied" to the publication about the relationship when he was previously approached by them before they published the story earlier this month. He denied the affair at the time.

Speaking about his decision to now come forward, Phillip said: "In an effort to protect my ex-colleague I haven't been truthful about the relationship.

"But my recent, unrelated, departure from This Morning fuelled speculation and raised questions which have been impacting him, so for his sake it is important for me to be honest now."

He said it was his "deepest wish is that both he [the colleague he had an affair with] and his family can now move on with their lives free from further intrusion."

Phillip announced that he has stepped down from planned presenting duties on the British Soap Awards, and he has totally resigned from ITV altogether, whilst thanking them for "the amazing opportunities" that they've given him.

Furthermore, Phillip has also parted company with his management team YMU after 35 years.
