Jo Whiley, 55, recalled hosting a performance by Sir Rod Stewart for BBC Radio Two’s In Concert series, that saw the rockstar dedicate songs that were very “meaningful” toward his wife Penny Lancaster. The radio DJ spoke of the “lovely” moment between the couple as Rod performed an intimate set for only 300 listeners including former model Penny.

Really meaningful

Jo Whiley

Jo explaining the intimacy of the In Concert format, said: “I remember Rod Stewart brought his wife Penny and some other family members.

“They were up on the balcony, he was so close to them it was like doing a school concert.

“A couple of the songs were obviously really meaningful, and were dedicated to her.

“It was unbelievably touching, like he was doing the concert for her,“ she added to Radio Times.

The In Concert series has been on screens for half a century and allows artists to play for a small audience, which Jo shared can be “intimidating” for big names who are used to performing in large arenas.

She continued: “It’s quite lovely, with someone like Rod or Elton John, seeing how much it matters to them.

“You can absolutely see how nervous they are. They’re playing to such a small audience, it’s quite intimidating.”

The radio DJ admitted that Ed Sheeran had looked “scared” when he performed in the intimate setting.

The programme to celebrate 50 years of performances, will broadcast 50 shows from the series across multiple platforms.

There will be vintage sets by Fleetwood Mac and David Bowie to more modern acts such as Kylie.

Jo will be hosting the show for the fifth time, after recently spending quarantine at her Northamptonshire home.

Meanwhile, Penny revealed that she and her husband had stumbled across a beautiful Italian staircase turned into a library while on a recent holiday to Venice.
