S Club admit ‘losing it’ in emotional mission to save lives after Pauls death

S Club says Paul would have been 'annoyed' if they cancelled the tour

S Club bandmembers Jon Lee and Bradley McIntosh opened up about grieving their friend Paul Cattermole as they attended the British Heart Foundation’s Heart Hero Awards on Wednesday night. Paul, 46, died in April from underlying heart issues, just weeks after the band announced their comeback tour.

In his memory, S Club has joined forces with the British Heart Foundation in the hope that raising awareness of heart conditions will help to save lives.

Speaking to Express.co.uk at the event held at London’s Glaziers Hall, Jon said: “Obviously, we lost Paul earlier this year due to underlying heart conditions that no one knew about. This is why we got involved with the British Heart Foundation so that we can help raise some awareness and raise some funds for research. We want to help stop this happening to one other person.”

The band have just wrapped up the UK leg of their reunion tour, minus Hannah Spearritt who pulled out of the tour following Paul’s death.

Opening up about how emotional it was to get back on the stage without Paul, Bradley shared that there were a few times where he “lost it”, but that he is sure Paul’s family will be “proud”.

He told us: “I got upset a few times, there were a few times where I lost it. But we have done it in the best way possible and we made the family proud as well.”

Despite the tragic events leading up to it, Bradley says the tour has been one of his favourites – namely because of the “incredible fans” – and he “can’t wait to get back out there” when the band perform in the United States and Canada in February 2024.

Paul’s death certificate, seen by Express.co.uk, confirmed that he died from a “cardiac arrhythmia, acute myocardial ischaemia and severe coronary artery atheroma and intraplaque haemorrhage”.

An arrhythmia is a problem with the rate or rhythm of a person’s heartbeat making it difficult to effectively pump blood to other parts of the body, according to the NHS.

Myocardial ischemia, meanwhile, is when reduced blood flow to a person’s heart keeps it from getting enough oxygen, impeding its ability to properly pump blood. This typically happens when arteries are blocked and a fatty material builds up inside arteries.

The British Heart Foundation states that the most common symptoms of arrhythmia are palpitations, dizziness, feeling faint, breathlessness, chest discomfort and tiredness.

It says you should visit your GP if palpitations continue or worsen over a long period of time. You should call 999 if, along with palpitations, you start to feel short of breath, have chest pain or feel faint or dizzy.
