Scooter Braun Admits He Didn’t Think Justin Bieber Would Survive His Wild Younger Years

Justin Bieber has been on quite the ride since stepping into the spotlight. He’s had numerous #1 albums, chart-topping hits, and several arrests along the way, but it appears he’s in a far better place now.

Bieber’s manager, Scooter Braun, has played a big role in his transformation into a more grounded person, but it hasn’t been easy. Braun recently admitted there was a period when he didn’t think Bieber was going to make it to adulthood because to his reckless ways.

Justin Bieber got in a lot of trouble during his younger years

Bieber had a rough patch in his earlier years as a star, frequently ending up in headlines for a litany of offenses, large and small.

In 2013, Bieber was caught on camera urinating in a mob bucket at a restaurant while screaming “F–k Bill Clinton!” according to TMZ. In Jan. 2014, he was arrested and charged with drunken driving, resisting arrest, and driving without a valid license after being seen street racing, according to CNN. Later that year, was charged with property damage for egging his neighbor’s home, and was required to pay more than $80,000 in restitution, according to the LA Times

Scooter Braun didn’t think Justin was going to survive

In Bieber’s new Youtube documentary, Justin Bieber: Next Chapter, Bieber and his team talk about how much has changed since then. While watching footage from one of Bieber’s shows, Bieber’s manager, Scooter Braun, admits he didn’t think Bieber would make it through alive.

“I’ll take it a step further, I’m glad you’re alive,” Braun says, laughing. “There were some times there where I was like, ‘Okay, we got another day.’”

Braun also details the worry he felt about Bieber’s well-being during a 2017 interview for Complex magazine’s Blueprint series.

“To me, the only point I had where I had where ‘Is it over?’ wasn’t a scary career over. “I thought I was gonna lose him,” Braun admits. “I thought he was gonna die. You know, and that was the scariest point because he was an adult, so he could go away from me. I couldn’t force him to stay next to me, and there were points where I didn’t know if in the morning he was gonna be there. And I was petrified, and I was doing everything I could, and I think he knows that. And I think, you know, at the end of the day, for him to come out of that and be where he is today is a testament to his strength.”

Justin has matured significantly in recent years

Over the last several years, Bieber has completely transformed his life. He took a hiatus from music, got married to Hailey Baldwin Bieber, and immersed himself in Christianity. During the same scene in the documentary, Bieber shares his thoughts about how everyone has grown since the beginning of his career.

“We’re more present now than any of those times, any of those videos,” Bieber says. “… I’m going in pizza shops and just getting in people’s face. ‘Bro, what are you doing?”

He adds that although things were rough for a while, he and his team have managed to overcome the obstacles and grow closer.

“No we—we got to, you know, do all this cool stuff,” Bieber says. “We made some mistakes along the way, but that perspective, like, look at what we get to do.
