Strictlys Shirley and Craig risk BBC backlash over video messages

Strictly Come Dancing judges Shirley Ballas and Craig Revel Horwood are selling personalised video messages whilst appearing on the BBC show.

The pair are currently signed up to Cameo – an American platform that sees celebrities receiving a fee to send uniquely-produced messages to fans across the globe.

A video from Shirley, 63, and Craig, 58, will set you back £103 each, but they may soon receive backlash from show bosses due to their offerings.

According to MailOnline, stars and talent appearing on BBC shows must seek the permission of the broadcaster before agreeing to any advertising commitments.

Regarding the Cameo profiles, a source told the publication: “Surely they are only able to sell their messages because they are on Strictly.

“They are on the telly every Saturday until Christmas, of course, people are going to be more likely to want to pay for messages from them, especially festive ones.

“Also, it is without question that all do their fame is elevated by their appearances on Strictly. There are people behind the scenes on the show, making normal salaries, who can’t believe this is allowed to go on.”

The BBC states that the commercial value of talent can sometimes increase due to their connection with their programmes, and that these associations should not be “exploited inappropriately”.

The editorial guidelines read: “Promotional work must not suggest BBC endorsement, compromise the BBC’s values, bring the BBC into disrepute, or gives the public reason to doubt impartiality or integrity of BBC on-air talent.”

While it isn’t specifically stated that Shirley and Craig can’t sell their videos whilst appearing on Strictly, Anton du Beke and Nikita Kuzmin have reportedly decided to take their Cameo profiles offline.

Earlier this week, Giovanni Pernice hit headlines for when he announced the launch of his own cosmetics brand, GP Vita.

Taking to Instagram, the 33-year-old wrote: “A dream project is finally launching next week! I’m super excited to be unveiling… well, you will have to wait until next Tuesday 24 October to find out.”

As per MailOnline, the star set up the company in June and is working alongside marketer Nicholas Hill and entrepreneur Giacomo Tontarelli.

According to the GP Vita website, the brand aims to “create products to inspire and bring joy to life.”

A spokesperson for Strictly reportedly told the publication: “For the avoidance of any doubt, Giovanni has not breached any BBC rules in launching his brand, and is following guidelines.”
