The barrier gesture Prince William gave brother Harry that proved rift
Prince William gavePrince Harry a “barrier gesture” during aroyal engagement that was the "opposite of an acknowledgement", according to a body language expert.
The brothers both attended the service of thanksgiving at St Paul’s Cathedral last year as part of thelate Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations. It was the first time Harry, 38, andMeghan Markle had been seen at a royal event sincestepping back from The Firm in 2020.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, 41, were seated far away from Prince William, 40, and his wifeKate Middleton– and the brothers were not seen talking together at any point.
But, despite the distance, body language expert Judi James said the current Prince of Wales made his feelings known by performing a “barrier gesture” as he and Kate, 41, walked past Harry.
She toldThe Mirror: “There was the opposite to an acknowledgement from William as he walked past Harry’s row during the parade out of the service.
"Sucking in his lips and with his chin pulled up in a gesture of resolve, he appeared to turn his head in the other direction for a moment.”
Judi went on to describe how Harry for the most part had a “haunted eye expression” with his blinking suggesting some inner anxiety. The body language expert added the Duke leaned in and down to the Duchess as she spoke, as though he was trying to get her support.
Judi said that Meghan, meanwhile, was "as perfect as it could have been under difficult circumstances" – her posture upright and a smile designed for a calm, low-key appearance.
William and Harry were forced to come together three months after the Jubilee for the Queen’s funeral in September – taking part in a joint walkabout with their wives around Windsor to look at floral tributes and greet thousands of wellwishers.
But the brothers' relationship appears to have been soured further by the revelations that emerged from the Sussexes’ controversialNetflix documentary and Harry’s bombshell bookSpare.
In the TV show, Harry claimed William"screamed and shouted" at him during the so-called ‘Sandringham Summit’ – when the Sussexes met the Prince of Wales,King Charles and the lateQueen to discuss their future in the monarchy.
The Duke said: "It was terrifying to have my brother scream and shout at me, and my father say things that just simply weren't true, and my grandmother, you know, quietly sit there, and sort of take it all in."
Meanwhile, among the most explosive allegations in Harry’s book Spare was one claim thatWilliam attacked Harry in a row over Meghan.
The Duke also claimed that the Prince and Princess of Wales encouraged him to wear hisinfamous Nazi uniform to a 2005 fancy dress party.
Despite the on-going tensions, Harry and Meghan announcedthey had received an invitation to King Charles’ upcoming Coronation – but the couple are yet to confirm their attendance for the big event on May 6.
