Zara McDermott gutted as boyfriend Sam’s signs ‘confiscated’ by Strictly staff

Strictly: Zara McDermott performs first dance of the series

Sam Thompson’s homemade signs supporting Strictly Come Dancing star girlfriend Zara McDermott were reportedly “confiscated” by studio staff shortly before the first live show of the series last weekend.

The star took to her Instagram stories to repost an image of her boyfriend and his best friend Pete Wicks holding encouraging boards in view of her 1.7 million followers, claiming: “Shame the signs got confiscated.”

The 26-year-old star had their support in the audience as she took to the floor but unfortunately, their plan to brandish signs to encourage the former Love Island contestant didn’t go to plan.

Eschewing any fancy flourishes both men opted for simple handwritten messages on white card with Sam’s reading: “You’re our star, Love you xxx,” while Pete’s stated: “We love you Goose xxx.”

The only banned items listed on the show’s website are mobile phones and smartwatches, as well as homemade food or loose items of fruit and any food containing nuts.

Commenting on the image, which was part of a carousel of pictures, Sam wrote: “Never been so proud in my life. The fact that @p_wicks01 also came to support was just the icing on the cake. I even got him a custom Zara shirt.”

Sam wasn’t referring to the popular high street retailer but rather his girlfriend as they were both wearing colourful short-sleeved shirts with her face all over them.

Zara clearly found it amusing commenting: “Seeing you smiling in the audience was just incredible but I did try not to look in your direction during my dance in case I laughed at the shirts.”

Unfortunately, their support didn’t help Zara when it came to the scores or the comments from acid-tongued Craig Revel-Horwood.

She and pro partner Graziano Di Prima danced the Cha Cha Cha to Crush by Jennifer Paige, but Zara, 26, struggled at points and was later branded “wooden” by judge Craig.

In contrast to his harsh comments, fellow judge Anton du Beke said: “We want more of everything, so keep building on that performance. I think you will be one to watch.”

Craig scored Zara a very low three, Motsi Mabuse scored her a six, Shirley Ballas gave out a five as did Anton, giving her a total of 18 points. This puts her joint third from bottom on the leaderboard along with Adam Thomas and pro partner Luba Mushtuck.

Strictly Come Dancing is on BBC One on Saturday evening.
