Artek Readies Stool 60 Anniversary Editions
To celebrate the 90th anniversary of the Stool 60, this year Artek has delivered three anniversary editions of the humble three-legged stool. Standing as one of the most elemental furniture pieces, the Stool 60 designed by Alvar Aalto was born of modernist ideals and Finnish innovation.
The great legacy and continued relevance of the universal object made entirely from native birch wood has barely changed in either material or form. The simplicity and timelessness brought through its ingenious construction and durability have kept the Stool 60 in production since 1933.
The anniversary editions have been developed by Artek’s own design team (Kontrasti and Loimu) and design studio Formafantasma (Villi). The Stool 60 Kontrasti celebrates the ingenious construction of the stool by inserting veneer sheets into incisions in each leg for a contrasting tone. The Stool 60 Loimu is produced from an exceptionally rare birch variant distinguished by a wavy, flame-like graining pattern.
Stool 60 Villi highlights the impact of climate change and industrialization on the forest and the evolving consequences of this for wood products. The collaboration with studio Formafantasma reasses the current strict selection criteria for birch wood from Artek.
The Stool 60 Kontrasti, Loimu, and Villi are available now via Artek.
