Christian Rex van Minnen's Gummies Are Back in New Limited-Edition Print
Symbolism runs rampant in the work of Santa Cruz-based artist, Christian Rex van Minnen. In any one of his disturbingly surreal portraits, gummies will float alongside death metal and pornographic motifs, but done so in a way, where there is a clear dialogue being formed between modern visual lexicon and the traditions of art history.
In collaboration with Avant Arte, van Minnen will release a new time-limited print that draws on his recent La Luz Atrapada exhibition that went on view this month at Veta Galeria in Madrid. Entitled Rainbow Bridge, the print is inspired by the work of Dutch Master Ambrosius Bosschaert, where van Minnen crafted his own trompe l’œil illusion where gummy lifeforms eerily float over hyperreal marble niches.
According to a release, the title of the artwork refers to a “theory describing the connection between our inner selves and different levels of consciousness.” One that consists of “three essential elements: an open-stone niche, the sky and a still life arrangement – symbolizing the self, the heavens and phenomena of the eye.”
Rainbow Bridge is a UV pigment print on 410gsm Somerset tub sized radiant white paper, finished with a matte varnish silkscreen seal and high-gloss spot varnish highlights. For those looking to purchase, the edition will be capped to a 24 hour period, which will release framed ($916 USD) and unframed ($614 USD) on November 29 at 7:30am PT.
