fragment design and UNDERCOVER's FW23 Collection Releases Next Week
Update: Hiroshi Fujiwara and Jun Takahashi are two of Japan’s most influential designers in fashion. Both boast incredible resumes, including countless collaborations with various brands across the world. For Takahashi’s UNDERCOVER, its FW23 womenswear show “Enjoy Yourself” in March was backed by Fujiwara’s fragment design as the two have reconnected for an expansive capsule titled “We Enjoy Ourselves.”
Previewed previously backstage, the duo has now revealed the complete range of over 30 designs — ranging from reversible outerwear to hoodies and scarves. Throughout this project, the late Manuel Göttsching’s one-track album E2-E4 served as inspiration with its brown chessboard pattern utilized across the garments produced. A black and white version of the pattern offers an alternate color palette as UNDERCOVER’s “U” logo and fragment design’s lightning bolt logo are scattered throughout.
Release for the capsule begins on November 8 at Isetan Shinjuku in Tokyo with limited t-shirts and blousons available, continuing until November 14. Its complete launch will take place on November 11 via UNDERCOVER storefronts and the brand’s website. Prices are expected to range from ¥13,200 JPY (approx. $88 USD) for the tees to ¥143,000 JPY (approx. $950 USD) for the reversible bomber jackets.

Original Story: Heading into UNDERCOVER’s latest show at Paris Fashion Week, founder Jun Takahashi shared that he enlisted fragment design founder and musician Hiroshi Fujiwara to produce the show’s music. Shortly thereafter, it was revealed that the duo had collaborated on pieces in the collection as well, despite originally only planning to do music. The collection itself — titled “Enjoy Yourself” — features UNDERCOVER’s FW23 womenswear and draws its inspiration from The Specials’ track “Enjoy Yourself” and the late Manuel Göttsching’s one-track album E2-E4.
Following the show, the Hypebeast Japan team went behind-the-scenes with Takahashi to explore the fragment design collaboration. Utilizing E2-E4’s chessboard-themed album cover, fragment design’s lightning bolt logo and UNDERCOVER’s “U” logo are scattered in select places throughout the brown/off-white and black/off-white patterns. These designs land on pieces that range from scarves to unisex outerwear to the robes worn at the conclusion of the collection’s runway show.
Stay tuned for official release information regarding fragment design x UNDERCOVER and the rest of UNDERCOVER’s “Enjoy Yourself” womenswear collection as it’s slated for a Fall/Winter 2023 launch via UNDERCOVER and select retailers worldwide.
