OpenAI Is Reportedly Considering Making Its Own Chips

OpenAI may soon be engineering its own chips to power its AI. The ChatGPT maker is reportedly considering manufacturing processors and has even been eyeing a potential acquisition related to the plans, according to Reuters.

The publication reported that ongoing internal discussions have detailed that OpenAI has yet to actually act on its plans but has been seeking to address the shortage of Nvidia-supplied chips needed to power AI. CEO Sam Altman has publicly expressed his frustrations with the shortage of chips and the limitations it puts on OpenAI.

Nvidia controls about 80% of the market of chips specifically powering AI technologies, per the report, giving them a monopoly over the space. The chips are also quite expensive, so producing their own could save the company money in the long term.

Among the reported potential solutions are making their own chips, working more closely with chipmakers including Nvidia or seeking out other suppliers beyond Nvidia.
