Seoul-Based Collective Balming Tiger Is Giving K-Pop an Alt Edge

The eleven-member-strong Balming Tiger is leading the charge in taking an unconventional approach to K-pop. The Seoul-based group has made its name on making K-pop with a surprise twist, infusing songs with hip-hop, electro and punk melodies and beats.

For listeners new to the group, “Kamehameha,” the latest release from the collective, serves as a primer in their alternative sound. The track is inspired by a song sung during a Korean drinking game. East Asian melodies provide the basis for the song, over which Balming Tiger waxes poetic about the perspective of a drunk character.

The artwork for the track was created by Chanhee Hong using generative AI. Hong also directed and produced an official music video.

Along with sharing the single, Balming Tiger has announced their debut album, January Never Dies. Slated to drop on October 19 via AWAL, the project will include the group’s previously released collaboration with RM of BTS, “SEXY NUKIM,” along with “Trust Yourself,” and “SOS.”
