Usher Honored With His Own Day in Las Vegas and Given Key to City

Usher may have grown up in Chattanooga, Tennessee, but the performer has left his mark on Las Vegas over the course of his musical career.

The singer has performed his fair share of one-off shows and his My Way residency in the city and now, he’s being honored with a key to Las Vegas.

On Tuesday, the city celebrated the R&B star with a ceremony conducted by City Councilman Cedric Crear and Mayor Carolyn Goodman, who declared October 17 to be “Usher Raymond Day.”

“Councilman, thank you so much for this momentous moment,” Usher said in a speech. “I know the efforts that go into doing something like this and I don’t take it for granted.”

“I wanna thank you for your belief in the future and your ability to be able to recognize those things that actually do grow your city. I am someone who is not just contributing by way of entertainment, but also to the heartbeat of the city.”

Last month, it was revealed that Usher would be the headliner for the Apple Music halftime show at the upcoming Super Bowl LVIII. It’s the first time the championship will take place in Las Vegas, set to go down at the Allegiant Stadium on February 11.

“We all know he is going to be headlining something for the first time — I don’t know if you really comprehend this, but for the first time in the history of the NFL, the Super Bowl is going to be here in Las Vegas,” Councilman Crear said. “How fitting is it that the entertainment for the Halftime Show is gonna be — and we already claimed you, my man — is our own Usher Raymond. And we know you’re gonna do us proud.”
