Vernon Kay to run ultramarathon for BBC Children in Need

Vernon Kay has announced that for this year’s Children In Need, he’ll be running an ultramarathon to raise money for the charity.

The Radio 2 presenter, 49, popped in for a chat on Zoe Ball’s breakfast show on Monday morning to announce his incredible fundraising runs.

Across four days, Vernon will be running marathons and ultramarathons to get from London’s Victoria Park to the stadium of Bolton Wanderers’ football club.

Vernon has supported his local team Bolton since childhood and has been seen at many of the team’s games, including comedian and actor Paddy McGuiness.

The challenge will begin for Vernon on Tuesday, November 14, and aim to finish around 9am on Friday, November 17, which is Children In Need Appeal Day.

According to the BBC, he’ll be covering approximately 115 miles on foot, with each step of his journey broadcast live on Radio 2 across the nation.

Speaking about the upcoming challenge, Vernon said: “I was just settling into my new mid-morning routine and now this!’

‘Everyone who has previously undertaken a BBC Children in Need challenge has raised so much money for this brilliant charity, so the pressure is on.’

He also admitted that the ‘pressure is on’ but that he was looking forward to taking the challenge on despite the immense difficulties ahead.

The BBC say: ‘Presenters will be broadcasting their regular shows offering Vernon support and keeping him spurred on with messages from the listeners.’

‘Vernon will also be broadcasting his own weekday morning show live whilst undertaking the challenge,’ being helped along his way by special guests.

Radio 2 director Helen Thomas said: ‘Who better than to take on this year’s Radio 2 challenge for BBC Children in Need than the newest member of our family?’

Earlier this month, Vernon celebrated his 20th wedding anniversary with Tess Daly, who’s spent September welcoming us back to Strictly Come Dancing.

The famous couple tied the knot back in September 2003 and have welcomed their two daughters Phoebe, 18, and Amber, 13 together in the years since.

Watch Children In Need on Friday, November 17 on the BBC.
