This Morning has been plunged into chaos as of late, following the departure of Phillip Schofield, 61, from the presenting line-up after 10 years.
His exit marked the end of his hosting partnership with Holly Willoughby, 42, who is due to return to the show very soon alongside familiar faces.
One public figure who has been one of the most outspoken about Schofield’s decision to step down from his role, as well as the news of his affair with a much younger This Morning employee, has been Eamonn Holmes, 63.
Holmes, who used to present the Friday edition of This Morning with his wife Ruth Langsford, 63, spoke to fellow GB News presenter Dan Wootton in a tell-all interview to share his twopence on the ongoing situation.
So has Schofield’s relationship with Holmes always been fractured, did the pair used to get along and what has the latter said about his ex-colleague?
Were Eamonn Holmes and Phillip Schofield ever friends?
While it’s apparent that Schofield and Holmes are at loggerheads with one another, this hasn’t always been the case.
One of the most memorable episodes of This Morning aired in February 2020, when Schofield announced publicly to the TV show’s audience that he was gay.
In addition to sharing a post on his Instagram Story, Schofield also opened up about his announcement live on This Morning, where he was joined by Willoughby, Holmes and Langsford.
After speaking directly to Willoughby and sharing a hug with her, Holmes and Langsford came in to join them in the sofa area.
Langsford hugged Schofield first, while he extended a hand towards Holmes, who took it before also embracing him.
‘Nobody should be embarrassed about their sexuality,’ Holmes said as he took his seat. ‘It’s fantastic that you have spoken out and there’ll be so many people who’ll be strengthened by what you said. As Holly said, we are all here by your side, we’ll be the first to stand beside you. As long as Steph’s happy, the family and the girls are happy, everything, everybody must be happy for you.’
Holmes later joked that he’d been hoping the announcement would be that Schofield was going to resign from This Morning so that he could get his job.
He also shared a photo on Instagram of the moment that he and Schofield hugged on the programme, writing in his caption: ‘Shoulder to shoulder …. No one should feel pain , embarrassment or intimidation over their Sexual orientation. A new chapter awaits you Phillip.’
What has Eamonn Holmes said about Phillip Schofield?
Holmes has made it abundantly clear on multiple occasions that he’s more than happy to express his candid views over Schofield, having known him personally while working on This Morning.
His most recent criticisms came during an interview on GB News, where he claimed that Schofield ‘created an atmosphere where people hated him’, and alleged that he ‘didn’t know anybody’s name’.
Holmes claimed that he didn’t know about Schofield’s relationship with his younger male colleague on This Morning, but has since found out from ‘a very, very good source’ that the man would arrive at the ITV studio typically on a Friday morning from Schofield’s London home ‘because Thursday was playtime when he and Phillip would hit the town’.
The GB News personality accused ITV of a ‘total cover-up’, while the broadcaster has said in a statement that a relationship between Schofield and the former This Morning employee was investigated in early 2020, with both parties ‘categorically and repeatedly’ denying the rumours.
Having shared that he and Langsford were particularly close with the runner who had an affair with Schofield, Holmes previously lambasted the TV personality for taking him and his wife ‘for fools’ with his ‘lies’.
Schofield’s exit from This Morning and ITV isn’t the first occasion that Holmes has spoken out against him.
In September last year, he lashed out at Willoughby and Schofield over queuegate, calling them ‘arrogant’ despite the pair denying that they had jumped ahead of the queue to see the late Queen Elizabeth II lying in state, and insisting that they had ‘respected’ the rules laid out for members of the media.
In 2019, it was reported that Holmes’ wife Langsford had filed a formal complaint against Schofield, and while speaking to Wootton, Holmes addressed this report head on.
‘But that was because he was so rude,’ he said in response to the complaint being brought up by Wootton, before later claiming that Schofield was ‘dismissive’ of the Loose Women.
How to watch Dan Wootton interview
Holmes’ interview with Wootton aired on GB News on Monday May 29, kicking off the week with a fresh bout of dramatic claims made about Schofield’s time on This Morning.
Ahead of the chat airing on the channel, a teaser was released hinting that the former ITV star was going to be anything but tight-lipped.
The full 22-minute conversation was later uploaded onto GB News’ YouTube channel for viewers to watch at their own discretion.
A further portion of the interview is due to air on Tuesday May 30 at 9pm on GB News.
This Morning airs weekdays from 10am on ITV.
