10 best waterproof jackets for men | The Sun

IF your wardrobe is missing one of the best waterproof jackets, you’re in the right place. An absolute staple item, a weather-resistant top layer is one of the most useful pieces of clothing you can own.

Depending on the style you go for, it’ll stop any rain from dampening your clothes underneath, but it can also double up as a handy, wind-resistant layer, which will keep you warm even on days when it’s not raining. The best waterproof jackets are lightweight, classically styled pieces, often with multiple pockets, hoods and adjustable fits in the form of buttoned cuffs or drawstring middles. In short, if you don’t own one, you should change that asap.

What to look for in the best men's waterproof jackets

Fabric

Key to the waterproof jacket is the fabric. Before making the big purchase you will of course want to ensure said fabric is indeed rainproof. The brand will usually make this very clear, either in the product description online or on the label. For the latter, if in doubt speak to a store assistant and they’ll be able to advise.

There are of course a few fabric options though. For something lightweight, look out for polyester or nylon blends, which weigh nothing at all and will keep you dry no matter how hard the downpour.

Alternatively, there is waxed cotton, which is heavier and not particularly breathable, making it warm and surprisingly insulating. Waxed cotton will also take on a unique patina with time, ageing depending on how hard you wear it.

Other waterproof fabrics include treated cotton and poly blends, or, on the more luxurious end of the market, treated wool. Regardless of what you go for, make sure the fabric is waterproof and you’ll have an incredibly handy piece of kit.

Style

As you might expect, there are numerous styles and variations when it comes to waterproof jackets. From lightweight parkas and bombers ,through to smarter macs and trench coats, there is an endless choice out there.

When deciding on your own, you should first decide when and where you intend to wear it. For something casual and laid back for instance, you can’t go wrong with a short, hooded parka. A style derived from military clothing, parkas are incredibly practical, and often have plenty of pockets and zipped compartments for your daily carries.

They’re also versatile and can be worn with everything from chinos and jeans to smarter trousers and shirts for work.

If you’re looking for smartness though, consider a more classically designed mac. With a simple button-through or zip front, a short collar and a tailored fit, this is a style of coat virtually unchanged from the mid-century. Usually available in stone or navy, wear this style with smarter trousers and knitwear for the office, or dress it down with jeans and chore jackets on the weekend.
