However much you agree with body positivity, when it comes to pets, things have to be viewed through a different lens.
Excess weight on an animal may make them look cuddly and cute, but can also cause severe health problems and even shorten their lifespan – which means keeping cats and dogs trim is imperative.
This chunky cat is looking for someone to help him on his own weight loss journey, after being brought to a rescue centre in the US weighing a whopping 30lbs.
The Humane Society of Huron Valley in Ann Arbor, Michigan, posted an ad on their Facebook this week searching for a potential home for him.
The charity’s post read: ‘Please, someone help us help Sterling. This 30lb boy needs a special adopter to help him lose weight.
‘We know, those plump cheeks are adorable. But obesity is terribly unhealthy for cats.
‘Sterling is fastidious about hygiene, but can’t groom himself properly (we had to shave matted fur off his back). He’s so lively and playful, but can’t chase after toys. He’s curious about the world, but can’t jump up to look out the window. He’s so affectionate, but can’t comfortably snuggle with his people.’
For comparison, a domestic cat should weigh around 10lbs. This varies between breeds, so vets use a ‘body condition score’ to assess whether they’re obese or not. A cat’s ribs and side profile will be checked, with the amount of definition on their body being given a score from one to 9.
Based on Sterling’s lack of visible ribcage and waistline, as well as the deposits of fat visible around his abdomen, he would likely be on the higher end of this scale, if not a 9 (which refers to ‘severely obese’ pets).
It’s not clear how the plus-sized pussycat managed to grow to the size he’s at now. But with it affecting his quality of life, he’s in desperate need of a caregiver to tell him no to extra portions.
The rescue centre’s Facebook post continued: ‘Sterling’s adopter will need to discuss his diet with their vet, and provide large litterboxes in easy-access areas until his mobility improves.
‘His transformation will be so rewarding, and we can’t WAIT to see it…can you imagine?? If Sterling is already so adventurous, confident, loving and playful, imagine what a joy he’ll be once he’s comfortable and healthy! It will truly turn his life around, and we know there’s a hero out there who can help him!’
