How to be a Carioca follows an American writer who has to learn the quirks of Rio de Janeiro’s people after moving to the Brazilian city. It stars the likes of Seu Jorge and Douglas Silva, and marks one of the first live-action Brazilian series the Oscar-nominated Saldanha has made in some years. He’s known for directing two of the Ice Age and Rio movies and picked up an Academy Award nom for 2017’s Ferdinand.
Saldanha is creating the show with Mariani and Diogo Dhal with scriptwriters Rodrigo Nogueira, Sabrina Rosa and Felipe Scholl. Moovie is producing.
Also screening at Iberseries is Galgos, the Movistar Plus+ drama from Buendía Estudios. The family business drama follows the Somarriba family and Galgo Group, a food giant that has seen significant growth over the past three generations. It is directed by Félix Viscarret and Nely Reguera, with the scriptwriters Clara Roquet, Francisco Kosterlitz, Lucía Carballal and Pablo Remón.
Both shows screen as part of the Chapter One strand of Iberseries. Also screening is the first episode of João Sem Deus from Ventre Studio, Canal Brasil, TVI Portugal, Coral Europa. The miniseries, a Brazilian-Portuguese co-production tells the story of two sisters who arrive in the Brazilian town of Abadiânia, 17 years before the arrest of João de Deus (aka João Teixeira de Faria), who was behind Brazil’s biggest ever sex abuse scandal. He was sentenced in 2020 to 63 years in prison for the rapes of multiple women.
