Doctors warn against dangerous ‘scalp popping’ trend that’s going viral on TikTok

TIKTOK can be a great source of content for practically every single interest and hobby.

But on occasion, doctors have to step in to warn users to not try certain tips and tricks that could harm your health.

The most recent viral craze is scalp popping and one expert has said it's definitely something you should not do at home.

The social media app has a plethora of short videos showing people taking part in the trend – which essentially entails someone yanking hard at a chunk of your hair.

Many users will then hear a 'popping' sound coming out of their scalp.

Seemingly, there is no rhyme or reason to the tecnique, with several accounts posting tutorials, with one claiming that 'you just know when it's the right piece of hair'.

They then twist the piece of hair and pull it.

TikTok doctor, Dr Anthony Youd was shocked at the videos online and couldn't believe that a hair dresser had also had a go at the technique.

Dr Ross Perry, Medical Director of Cosmedics skin clinics warned against the trend and said it could be dangerous for those having their hair pulled.

While he states that the technique is used in some cultures to promote headache relief, he also says it's 'not even worth trying'.

"Firstly you can easily tear the inside of the scalp which can lead to bleeding and possible infections, it can become sore and extremely uncomfortable.

"It can also cause damage to the hair follicle on a long term basis which could lead to hair loss and let’s not forget damage to the neck and head from the force of the hair being pulled", he told Tyla.

Another expert warned that the trend is 'highly concerning'.

Hair transplant specialist at Vera Clinic, Dr Gokhan Vayn said it can cause bleeding on the scalp and sores on your head.

“The ‘popping’ sound you hear is the galea aponeurotica (soft tissue between your scalp and skull) popping off your skull", he added.

Why scalp health is important

Dr Sara Kayat, Viviscal Medical Ambassador explains why having a healthy scalp is important and how to understand when there is a problem.

She said that a healthy scalp is so important as follicles that are affected by infection, dandruff, oil and debris may affect the growth of hair.

"Signs that your scalp may not be healthy include itchiness, flakiness or dandruff, redness, oiliness and spots or bumps.

"Often simple changes to your usual hair care regime can be enough to remedy this but, if not, you should be reviewed by a doctor", she explained.

Dr Sara, who works with Viviscalsaid that there are some telltale signs when it comes to spotting hair loss.

"Often the signs appear gradually and may be difficult to pick up on, but women tend notice that their ponytail feels thinner, or their parting appears wider.

"One may also notice more hair being shed in the shower or when brushing. The thinning may be more noticeable at the crown, or it may manifest as a receding hairline."

She said if you want to improve your scalp health you should:

  • Avoid products that contain alcohol as they dry the scalp
  • Was your hair regularly to avoid a build up of debris
  • Treat your scalp if you have dandruff

There are many reasons why your scalp might be sore – but the popping trend certainly won't help.

Experts previously revealed what your scalp could be saying about your underlying health.

Stephanie Sey, expert trichologist for Nizoral said that your scalp could be sore due to your diet.

She explained that diet can have an impact on your scalp condition.

"A balanced diet, comprising of carbohydrates, healthy fats, proteins, fibre, vitamins and minerals is the best thing for the hair. Eating a diet that is rich in fresh vegetables, meat, and fruit supports healthy growth for thick, full hair.

“Processed foods like fast food and ready meals are typically high in sugar, salt and unhealthy fats as well as chemical additives.

"These foods typically have very little in the way of the nutrients that our body needs to stay healthy, such as vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.

"The hair is the very last system in your body to receive nutrients (as it is one of the least essential), so if your body is not receiving adequate nutrients, your hair will likely be affected", she added.
