Equation puzzle leaves internet users scratching their heads
Can YOU solve this mathematical brain teaser? Equation puzzle leaves online viewers scratching their heads
- A baffling math equation comprising of objects has sent X users into meltdown
- Users asked to solve sum using clues of tables, blue paper rolls and alarm clocks
- Differing answers leave many stumped – with correct answer believed to be ’19’
A new mathematical brainteaser is leaving internet users stumped… with a range of answers offered in solution.
The baffling equation was uploaded to X, formerly Twitter, by user Emmy, from the US, to her 170K following on December 7.
Emmy, known as @brixwe on the social app, shared the image alongside the caption, “What did you get?” – generating over 100 varying guesses from keen critical thinkers.
The puzzle comprises of images of particular objects: a table, an alarm clock set to a precise time and rolls of blue paper.
Three sums have been pre-solved, which serves as a clue for analytical minds to work out the answer to the final equation – but it appears to be more difficult than it looks.

The first sum contains three alarm clocks reading 02:00 and have been added together, with the answer listed as 6.
The second equation contains only one 02:00 alarm clock, alongside two four-legged tables, with the total added together revealed as totalling 10.
The third sum is made up of one four-legged table, six rolls of blue paper and a further six rolls of blue paper, totalling 16.
Finally, the fourth equation is left to an observer’s devices to solve, as the complexity is turned up a notch.
The sum displays four blue paper rolls, to be added to a three-legged table, which is multiplied by an alarm clock that reads 05:00.
Over 100 bamboozled X users took to the the comments to share their answers, with differing guesses ranging from ’12’ to ’40.’
Multiple guesses of ’12,’ ’24,’ and ’40’ were left by individuals who attempted to work out the perplexing puzzle.
Meanwhile, one person, who gave up guessing entirely, simply wrote, ‘A headache’ as their answer, while another calculated, ‘Possibly 15, since the clock time changed.’

However, some X users insist that the correct answer is ’19,’ with individuals breaking down and demonstrating their evaluations.
One person wrote, ‘Paper is 4, table is 3 (notice legs) and clock is 5. 3×5 = 15 +4 = 19,’ while another agreed, commenting, ’19 plus or minus a foot. I’m just saying.’
Earlier this year, in January, parents shared maths problems on Twitter after Prime Minister Rishi Sunak declared that maths should be compulsory for every pupil up to the age of 18.
Every year, some 100,000 pupils across the country sit 11+ exams in the hopes of achieving a highly sought-after grammar school place.
And, while some parents who excelled at mathematics in school, they may now find themselves stumped when attempting to help with their children’s homework.
Are you a maths whizz, or can you at least solve the same problems posed to an 11-year-old child preparing for an 11+ exam? Test your brain with these number puzzles here.
