Aldi has announced the introduction of new price cuts on certain products in a bid to help reduce food waste. According to a report in 2018, the UK produced more than 9.5million tonnes of food waste, all contributing to greenhouse gas emissions.
To help combat this, the discount supermarket will be marking down goods in 920 stores.
This new initiative will see items reduced by 30 percent if the packaging is imperfect.
Customers will be able to make savings on items such as rice, pasta, cereal and tinned foods.
The price cuts will help Aldi work towards its target of halving its food waste by 2030 as well as helping shoppers save money.
The time that food items will be reduced will vary by store, according to the retailer.
Products will also be sold on a “first-come, first-served basis”.
Julie Ashfield, Managing Director of Buying at Aldi, said: “Shoppers hunting for the best deals already head to Aldi for the lowest prices, but our latest reductions will help customers find even more bargains.
“Not only that, but these discounts also help us to reduce food waste – an urgent issue which we are committed to tackling.”

The move follows on from the launch of 75 percent reductions on perishable products on their last day of shelf life.
The supermarket already offers shoppers great prices, with consumer group Which? naming Aldi as the cheapest supermarket in the UK for the month of September.
Aldi has taken several steps to help reduce its carbon footprint and its plastic usage too.
This includes the introduction of fridge doors in its stores to help reduce energy consumption.
The change, which followed a successful trial, is said to help reduce each store’s energy consumption by 20 percent.
Mary Dunn, Managing Director of Corporate Responsibility at Aldi UK, said: “We are always looking for new ways to minimise our carbon footprint, which is why all our stores already use 100 percent renewable electricity, and our new stores also utilise natural refrigerants and feature efficient LED lighting.
“Introducing fridge doors is another step on that journey to reduce our energy consumption and we hope that customers enjoy the new, more sustainable shopping experience.”
In other Aldi news, the retailer has launched gift cards for the first time in all its UK stores.
To help the environment, the cards are plastic-free and located next to the greeting cards in the supermarket.
Customers can activate the cards at the till with the amount of their choosing, up to £500.
Julie Ashfield said: “The Aldi gift card is the perfect present for any Aldi fan, whether it goes towards their food shopping or that must-have item from our Specialbuys aisle.
“We hope customers enjoy giving the gift of Aldi to their friends and family!”
