A young woman who lived at the haunted house that inspired The Conjuring film has shared her spookiest experiences.
Madison Heinzen, 23, who is now responsible for the Rhode Island farmhouse that gave rise to James Wan’s 2013 film, has described the strange sightings and sounds that she has experienced over the years.
But despite experiencing multiple unsettling moments in the three-bedroom house, Madison told The Sun she still sleeps there on a regular basis.
And, the brave woman who has reported seeing unusual figures, such as horror film character Slender Man, and hearing eerie sounds, including growling, remains devoted to her role as ‘ghost host’ at the farmhouse.
The daughter of paranormal investigators, Madison runs tours at the 19th century farmhouse that her parents, Cory and Jennifer Heinzen, used to own.
The 19th century haunted farmhouse that gave rise to The Conjuring is situated in Rhode Island, Maine. Current caretaker Madison Heinzen still sleeps there on a regular basis despite experiencing multiple unsettling moments
She recalled her first day in the house, along with her mother and father, her brother and her now husband, Jacob, when she heard ‘what sounded like a growl’ above her head.
‘I was looking through stuff the owner left behind,’ she said. ‘It freaked me out because I was like, maybe I’m not meant to be touching that stuff, maybe they don’t like that.’
The experience was especially scary for Madison because she was the only one who heard the sound.
Another moment which made an impact on Madison came when she was sitting at the kitchen table doing an interview.
This time, however, she wasn’t the only one to hear the two claps that seemingly came out of nowhere.
She said: ‘We all looked at each other cause we were all standing still and I was like “”Oh my God”, because that was something that happened in the movies that they would play hide and clap.’

Even now she is in the dark as to where the sound came from because the surveillance cameras that cover the entire house could shed no light.
In a scene in The Conjuring, the characters are blindfolded while they try to tack down the other players by listening for a clap.
When claps start coming from strange places, including the basement, the film takes a frightening turn.
To this day, Madison refuses to venture into the basement on her own.
Madison has also been witness to strange sightings in the house, including a shadowy figure that had ‘no face, no features, no light’.
While she has admitted to feeling frightened from time to time, Madison told The Sun that she tries to not think about specific experiences as scary so much as ‘unbelievable’.
The Conjuring, directed by Australian director James Wan, was released in 2013. It starred Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga (pictured) as paranormal investigators star as Ed and Lorraine Warren
When she’s taking visitors round the house, she will make use of various pieces of equipment to help expose ghostly activity.
Her favourites include dowsing rods – copper rods that supposedly move with supernatural energy – and spirit boxes.
By creating static white noise, these boxes apparently allow spirits to communicate with sound and letters.
Amongst other unusual happenings, the Maine resident reports hearing spirits say her name and hearing child’s laughter.
