Going out for a steak dinner is probably one of life's best indulgences.

However, it doesn't always have to break the bank, with restaurant chain Miller & Carter offering diners a three-course steak dinner for less than £20 on its new lunchtime menu.

But is it any good? Well, luckily for you, I tried it out for to give their new menu the taste test. And I have the verdict waiting for you right here.

The new menu gets diners two courses from £15.95 and three courses starting from £18.95, which I'm sure you'll agree is great value. Diners can choose from four of the brand's popular starters – baked cheddar mushrooms, salt & pepper calamari, halloumi fries or sticky chipotle chicken.

While for mains, Miller & Carter fans can get themselves a 7oz 50-day aged Black Angus Rump steak, accompanied by its classic and iconic onion loaf, balsamic-glazed tomato and a choice of seasoned fries or mixed salad.

There's also plenty of other dishes for guests to choose from, including prime steak burgers, fish & chips, chargrilled chicken, mac & cheese, plant-based burgers, half rack of barbecue ribs and much more.

Three desserts are also available for afters – which are salted caramel profiteroles, crème brûlée and apple & damson crumble as well as the choice of a mini dessert and hot drink.

But enough about the details, how did it taste? First up for me was the sticky chipotle chicken. I was feeling a bit sceptical because when I hear the word 'sticky' I automatically think something is going to be too sickly sweet. However, I was pleasantly surprised. The dish had a tasty flavour which wasn't too sugary and complimented the chicken, which was tender and moist, perfectly. You also got a good-sized portion which would definitely fill a hole until the main arrived.

I brought my mum along with me and she tried out the baked cheddar mushrooms, which she also said was great. In her words it was 'very cheesy' but now overpowering. It also came with a good amount of bread to dip in it, which was also fresh and tasty.

I also couldn't help myself and ordered some spiced cauliflower wings from the main menu as an extra side for myself. This was Asian-style, crispy fried spiced cauliflower complete with Som Tam dipping sauce. I'm not going to lie, I was a tad disappointed by these, as I found the cauliflower a bit underdone and hard. But I think I've had cauliflower bites in the past, rather than wings, so maybe this is why they tasted different to what I was expecting. I also wasn't mad on the sauce. There was nothing really wrong with it, but personally, I would have preferred a creamy sauce, but that may be just personal taste. To be fair, these aren't on the lunch menu, but I thought I'd include in the review as they're in the photos anyway.

Next up was the main, and of course, we both had to go for the steak, which is the rump 7oz. You can also get a filet mignon 5oz on the lunch menu, but there's a £6.50 supplement for that. When the steak came out, it did look quite small, but you have to remember this is a lunch menu, and you're getting three courses for less than £20. Even though it looked small on the plate, it definitely filled me up and I couldn't even eat most of my fries as I knew I had desert coming too.

I had the beef dripping sauce with my steak, which I've had from Miller & Carter before and it's probably my my favourite steak sauce ever. It's rich, just the right amount of saltiness and complements the steak perfectly. My mum had the classic béarnaise, which she also said was great. As well as these two, you can choose from rich red wine sauce, tomato and garlic chimichurri and three peppercorn, so it's a great selection and also good that you don't have to pay extra.

Then onto desert, which for me was the salted caramel profiteroles. I've never been a huge fan of profiteroles but I can't say no to anything staled caramel, which is why I went for these. Although they were tasty, I found the salted caramel sauce a bit too overpowering for me so am not sure I would order again unless I was in the mood for something very sweet. My mum went for the apple and damson crumble though, which she said was great and full of fruit. It came with a generous helping of custard to drizzle all over it and I must admit I had a bit of food envy when I saw it come out.

If you're not feeling up to a full desert at the end, you can also enjoy either a mini creme brûlée, mini rich banoffe pie or a mini brownie with a tea or coffee.

All in all, the lunch menu is amazing value and the food is very tasty. You also get generous portions, apart from the steak, but that's understandable to be honest. The service for us was good until an incident where a staff member hurt herself, when it turned a bit slower, but that was just a one-off situation which couldn't really be helped.

So if you're looking for a steak lunch which is tasty, filling and won't break the bank, definitely give Miller & Carter a go for your next lunch date!
