I want to move away with my son but I'm worried I'll upset my family

DEAR DEIDRE: I KNOW moving out of our dead-end town would be good for me and my son, but it’s a big step. I’m scared I’ll distance myself from my family and friends.

What if the fantasy I’ve dreamed up is way better than the reality?

I’m a woman of 42 and my son’s 12. I’ve lived in the same town all my life. When I got married, I moved a whole ten minutes down the road.

I’ve never disliked it here but since my husband left two years ago, I’ve felt restless. I’d love to move to a city where there’s work and more for my son.

But I don’t want to hurt my friends or family. I know my parents would hate not seeing us both every weekend.

Plus my best friend just had a baby. Popping over for a cup of tea would be a thing of the past.

DEIDRE SAYS: You have to do what is best for you and your son.

Once your family sees how content you are in the city, I’m sure they’ll be happy for you. Plus it gives you all an excuse to explore the city together when they come to visit.

You are right, though. This will be a big change.

You and your son should have a weekend in the city to start getting a feel for life there.

Try out the public transport, identify which areas you would like to live in and work out where all your local services would be.
