I’m A Celeb’s Seann Walsh’s Strictly scandal explained from ex’s statement to his response in 2018

During his time in the I'm A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! jungle Seann Walsh has not shied away from recalling the moment his career hit an all-time low.

The comedian was caught up in a scandal when, during his stint on Strictly Come Dancing in 2018, he was pictured kissing his dance partner Katya Jones.

The pair's romance was particularly shocking as both Seann and Katya were in relationships.

Katya was married to fellow Strictly professional dancer Neil Jones while Seann was in a five-year relationship with actress Rebecca Humphries who he was living with at the time.

Before the scandal, Walsh was a successful stand-up comedian, touring the country with several successful shows and appearing on TV comedy staples such as Live at the Apollo and Mock The Week but the incident changed everything in an instant and Seann's popularity dwindled.

The comedian is hoping his second shot at reality TV will help him change the public's opinion of him.

On Wednesday I'm A Celeb viewers saw Seann tell campmate and fellow comedian Babatúndé Aléshé about the "lowest point" in his career.

Recalling the experience as they did the washing up, Seann said: “15 nights, 16 nights at the Apollo. So funny, it’s the classic you don’t know what you’ve got until it’s gone. It’s that cliché. It’s like, ‘Oh, I was doing well. I didn’t realise.’

“Easily the most depressing month of my entire life, Edinburgh after Strictly. We get to Edinburgh, right, I think it’s a 200-seater, I’ve never not in Edinburgh sold out the first night. It doesn’t even occur to me that it’s not sold out.

“Just before I’m about to go on, my agent comes in and goes, ‘Just so you know, there’s like 30 people.’ To get told that when you’re just about to go on… horrific. It was at that point I was like, ‘Oh, oh…’”

Seann added: “My career was dead, I was over.”

Rebecca, his girlfriend at the time posted a statement, saying: “Those pictures were taken on October 3. It was my birthday. I was alone at home when Seann texted at 10pm saying the two of them were going for one innocent drink.

“We spoke and I told him, not for the first time, that his actions over the past three weeks had led me to believe something inappropriate was going on."

She said that despite Seann and Katya's public apology, she had not received one personally.

“But – this whole business has served to remind me that I am a strong, capable person, who is now free; and no victim," Rebecca said.

She added: “I hope he gets what he wants from this. I’m not sorry I took the cat though."

What has Seann said about the incident?

“I said sorry. I sat on (The Jonathan Ross Show) and apologised. I sat next to Will.i.am and Samuel L Jackson and apologised. That will forever be the weirdest moment of my life and I have to say probably the worst moment of my life," Seann told Sue Cleaver at the I'm A Celeb camp.

Sue asked: “Why did that crucify you? Why did that have such an impact?”

“To be totally honest with you, my poor ex, my girlfriend at the time, posted a statement. That was the end of me.”

He told the Bush Telegraph: “That’s something in my life that I don’t want to go back to. Obviously I knew it would come up.

“I just want to be clear that I’m very sorry about what happened and I really want this to be a positive experience and it really has been. I want to come out of here and move forward.”

Walsh characterised the episode as a "trauma" for him in a March 2022 interview, in which he also revealed how he sought treatment for depression and anxiety to help him cope with the aftermath.
