A former escort has said that the number of sexual encounters she has had is “equivalent to the state of Ohio’s population”.

Ashley Huffman is probably exaggerating there – Ohio’s population is not far short of 12million –

But Ashley has a dark traumatic past with a harrowing life story of abuse from a very young age. Disturbingly she was sexually abused from a young age by her own brothers has undoubtedly left its mark on her.

Ashley says she worked as a prostitute for over 20 years, after first being coerced by her brothers into performing a sex act when she was just five years old, and then raped by her much older boyfriend before she reached her teens.

But she got little support from her family: “I was raised on ‘what goes on in this house stays in this house,’ she told the Unfiltered Stories podcast, “I just assumed that was a normal thing for all families.”

She explains that when she was around 12, she got involved with a man who was in his late teens. He came to visit her at her grandmother’s house and even though it soon became clear that he was close to 20, no-one in the house seemed to have a problem with him dating Ashley.

On the same day, the man forced himself upon her. She says: “I was a virgin at the time. I remember telling him ‘no’ numerous times, because I was scared and I was a virgin. He ended up forcing me on the ground and basically taking my virginity.

“He left shortly after that. As soon as I could hear the door to the garage open I went upstairs – my aunt was in the kitchen and I told her what happened. She told me to just go upstairs and take a shower and take a hot bath and relax and get ready for school so that's exactly what I did.

“I took that as ‘OK well if she’s not making a big deal about it then maybe this is what boys do to girls. I would say it was not even a whole month after that when I started prostituting myself.”

Ashley says that it became clear to her that the man had also been having a relationship with he aunt as well. She added: “I never put two and two together [at the time] but he was having sexual relations with my aunt as well the entire time."

Those early experiences launched Ashley into a horrific cycle of drunk and drug use, rape, violence and occasional spells behind bars. But as grim as that life was, Ashley admits that she sometime misses it.

Ashley says: “My whole life was nothing but chaotic before I even started prostitution, so when I started prostituting it was like I felt at home, I felt at peace. it was always like a chaotic fast-paced lifestyle and that's what I was used to.

“When you go from living that lifestyle for so long … to living the life that I have now it is boring as hell. There's not a lot of chaos going on there's not a lot of anything going on so the highlight of my day is my kids and their school activities.”
