Contestants have come and gone in the latest series of MasterChef The Professionals but one thing has remained constant through the 14 episodes of series 16 so far – the split dill sauce.
Plate after plate has been served up featuring the on-trend sauce – which sees a creamier sauce split with a flavoured oil – to judges Marcus Wareing, Monica Galetti and Gregg Wallace.
While the judges remain enthusiastic about the trendy sauce, viewers have had their fill of dill it seems.
The latest episode of the BBC One programme saw the remaining ten chefs split into two groups, with the first five seen fighting for their place in the semi-final.
The latest challenge saw five of them serving lunch to 25 ‘movers and shakers’ of the restaurant world in a central London pop-up – followed by another gruelling studio cook-off in which they were asked to make their Last Dish on Earth.
Dill fill! Viewers watching episode 14 of MasterChef The Professionals couldn’t hold back when yet another sauce ‘split with dill appeared’. The sauce has appeared in almost every episode of the latest series of the show
In an episode filled with uncertainty over who would progress, one thing was certain – a dish with a sauce split with dill oil was highly likely to appear. And it did, twice.
First up was Charlie, from Cornwall, who served up a dish of steamed turbot drizzled with a Cornish clotted cream champagne sauce split with dill – and the culinary trend proved popular, with judge Monica saying the dish did ‘Cornwall proud’.
Minutes later, Leeds-based contestant Molly offered up an Irish chowder, complete with a mussel veloute split with dill…and saucy comments came thick and fast on social media.
‘If I had a pound for every time Sean Pertwee says “split with dill oil”‘ commented one viewer, while another quipped: ‘I’ll split YOU with dill oil in a minute, mate.’

After James went through following a strong performance in the pop-up restaurant challenge – serving up an elaborate prawn toast and katsu sauce – four chefs battled it out for the remaining three places.
The sad news for Molly was that the fashionable split sauce couldn’t save her from the MasterChef axe, and the five became four. Her Last Dish on Earth proved to be her last dish in the MasteChef The professionals kitchen.
The remaining four pro chefs will now take a place in the semi-finals, with the other group of five soon to be reduced to four in the next episode of the show.
