Matthew Perry’s family life from Friends star dad to beloved stepfather

Matthew Perry, the beloved Friends actor who played Chandler Bing from 1994 to 2004, tragically passed away at his Los Angeles home on Saturday 28 October.

The 54 year old was found unresponsive in his jacuzzi by his assistant, before being pronounced dead by officers from the Los Angeles Police Department.

Following his death, Matthew has left behind his large family who he has been very vocal about – especially during his 2022 The New York Times bestselling memoir, Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing, where he shared how supportive they've been of him.

The family released a statement to People magazine on 29 October upon the news of Matthew's passing. It said: "We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of our beloved son and brother. Matthew brought so much joy to the world, both as an actor and a friend. You all meant so much to him and we appreciate the tremendous outpouring of love."

Who is Matthew Perry's dad?

Matthew is survived by his father and fellow actor, John Bennett Perry. The 82 year old has appeared in numerous films over the years, including Independence Day and George of the Jungle, plus TV shows Days of Our Lives, Little House on the Prairie, and Murder, She Wrote.

In 1998, John also appeared in an episode of Friends alongside his son. He played the father of Rachel Green's boyfriend, Joshua, during 'The One with Rachel's New Dress.'

Earlier this month, Matthew took to Instagram to share a photo of him and his dad in his new LA home. The actor captioned the shot: "Here is me, and my father John, both holding a beverage."

Who is Matthew Perry's mum?

Matthew's mum, Suzanne Langford used to be the press secretary for then Canadian Prime Minister, Pierre Trudeau.

Matthew was also a classmate of Pierre's son, Justin, the current Canadian PM.

Suzanne split from Matthew's dad John before his first birthday, and went on to marry Canadian broadcaster, Keith Morrison. John remarried to his wife Debbie Boyle in 1981.

Who is Matthew Perry's step dad?

Keith Morrison has been a correspondent for Dateline NBC since 1995. Reports reveal that Keith has known Matthew since he was 10, when he became part of the family.

Over the years, Keith has spoken about being Matthew's stepdad, and has only ever offered praise. He once reportedly told People: "He’s one of those people who always is the center of the room for a reason and it was so as a kid.

"On the hockey team, I used to take him off to his hockey games on Saturday mornings. It was like Matthew and the hockey team. He was the one who scored all the goals. He was the guy.

"The same on the tennis court. He was extremely, extremely good on the tennis court and very intense. He’s an intense, talented, focused character. He’s very bright. That was always the case as he was growing up," he added.

Keith also has a son called Michael from his previous marriage.

Who are Matthew Perry's siblings?

Thanks to his blended family, Matthew has five siblings. His mum Suzanne and stepdad Keith welcomed their first child together in 1981, a daughter called Caitlin. In his memoir, Matthew recalled that he "instantly" loved his sister.

His second sister Emily was born four years later, while his brother William arrived in 1987. Finally, Suzanne and Keith had their fourth child, a daughter, Madeline, who was born in 1989.

On his father's side, Matthew also has another sister, Maria Perry, also known as Mia. John and his second wife, Debbie Boyle, welcomed their daughter in 1986.
