Motorist claims ‘99% of drivers’ cant work out what simple road sign means

There is a sign that often pops up on roads across the UK.

It's spotted by drivers quite often, but one road user is adamant that few people actually know what it means.

People who use the roads have to abide by a number of rules when taking to the wheel, but some people always think they know better than others.

As you have to pass a theory test to be able to drive, you'd think most motorists would be savvy with road signs.

Despite this, there's a common road sign that people seem to have trouble identifying.

A person recently took to Reddit to say how annoyed they were with people's lack of understanding, and revealed what the sign actually means.

The common sign has a white backdrop and features a single black stripe through the middle, which is positioned at a 45 degree angle.

Sharing it on Reddit, the social media user said: "I'm convinced 99% of drivers don't know what this sign means."

The bold claim encouraged people to reply and share their theories and guesses as to what the sign symbolises.

One person replied: "National speed limit, but what that limit is depends on what you’re driving.

"For example if you’re driving a BMW it’s 100mph and excuses you from using indicators."

Another replied: "There's a road near me with this sign and if you're averaging more than 30 down it you're either a complete plank or suicidal."

A third added: "One of the girls at my old hairdressers genuinely thought it meant 'go whatever speed you want'."

But the RAC website offered a detailed explanation as to what the sign actually means.

The website states: "A white circular sign with a single black diagonal stripe through it tells you that the national speed limit applies on the upcoming stretch of road.

"It supersedes any previous speed limit signs you may have had to adhere to, such as passing through temporary roadworks.

"Of course, even when the national speed limit applies, it might not always be safe to drive at that speed, so use your common sense on this."

Essentially this means you can either drive to the speed limit or to the speed of traffic on the road.

But – when it comes to the national speed limit – it all depends on where you're driving and the type of vehicle you're driving too.

If you're travelling in quite a built up area with lights, the speed limit is 30mph unless otherwise directed.

On a single carriageway cars should stick to 60mph, and this drops down to 50mph for vans and larger vehicles.

This lower speed limit also applies to drivers towing something on the back of the car.

Then – on a dual carriageway and motorway – it's 70mph but people need to stick to 60mph when travelling in goods vehicles or cars carrying trailers or caravans.
