DEAR DEIDRE: MY older brother has outed me to my parents. In a way I’m relieved but I’m angry as well.
I’m a lad of 18 and my brother is 21. He is straight with a girlfriend and he doesn’t know how it feels to be gay.
I could have denied it when he told my parents but I decided I had to be honest with them. They were unhappy that I hadn’t told them myself and I think they are hoping that this is just a phase.
I think they’ll be fine when it all sinks in and they’ve got used to the idea, but I have to admit that I’m feeling all over the place. Do you think they’ll still love me the same?
DEIDRE SAYS: Ask them that question. It’s likely that they too feel all over the place right now.
They may also need reassurance that they are still important to you.
Your brother may have meant well but that wasn’t his call.
You can all find support through FFLAG, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (www.fflag.org.uk, 0845 652 0311).
