A bride who works as a pastry chef has sparked bitter controversy after baking her own wedding cake which critics slammed as ‘messy.’

Lilly Kinman and Dennis Mendoza tied the knot at a ceremony in Altamonte Springs, Florida, earlier this month.

In a behind-the-scenes video, shared by hairstylist Adrianna Thomas on TikTok, the bride was filmed building her own cake prior to saying her vows.

But social media users were left divided after the results were revealed.

In the clip, which has so far been viewed more than 5.3 million times, Lilly can be seen in a white robe with her wedding hair and makeup already fully set.

With the help of her bridesmaids, she begins by building up the layers of sponge which has already been iced in blue and white hues.

She secures each tier by using a piping bag to add extra icing before finishing her creation with a flourish of decorative flowers.

Adrianna uploaded the clip alongside a caption that read: ‘I have the most unique and talented brides!

‘Lilly stacked her own wedding cake the day of, full face, hair done and white robe! Not one crumb on her robe.’

But despite the bride’s talents, viewers were left bitterly divided in the comments.

In one camp, there were those who praised Lilly’s skill and dedication.

Many also noted how much money she would have saved, with the average price of a wedding cake in the US being $500.

Many commenters were quick to criticize the finished results – slamming the cake as ‘messy’ and ‘ugly’, and insisting she should have ‘got somebody else to do it’

One wrote: ‘It’s a great idea she’s the only one who can realize the cake she wanted perfectly.’

Another added: ‘I love that she will be able to look back and say she did her own wedding cake.

‘Weddings are supposed to be sentimental, not just for show.’

And a third said: ‘I love it and it’s got to be so special to her spouse because she made it with love.’

However on the flip side, there were those who praised Lilly’s skill and dedication – and many also noted how much money she would have saved

Lilly, who now works as a pastry chef, first met Dennis in 2019 when they were both on military deployment

But, on the other hand, there were those who were far less complimentary and criticized the aesthetic of the finished product.

Someone said: ‘Sis I am very frugal but some things you should pay people to do and this is one of those things.’

One commenter added: ‘Wait… that’s finished…? Get somebody else to do it.’

And another simply wrote: ‘She should have hired a professional.’
