Plastic surgeons urge women to screen breast implants following rupture issue

Lots of women have surgery for all sorts of reasons, and some chose to boost their boobs. But those with breast implants have urgently been warned to get them screened.

It comes after actress Jess Impiazzi, told her followers on Instagram that she believes the surgery she had in December 2022 led to a serious decline in her health. She had to go under the knife to replace a ruptured breast implant, and she was later diagnosed with Lupus.

Leading surgeons Mr Paul Harris, Mr Aadil Khan, and Mr Amir Sadri formed Implant Health after recognising the need for patients with breast implants to have ongoing support after their surgery. They're now advising all women with implants to get them screened to check they're safe.

Speaking to The Sun, Jess, 34, explained how her crippling symptoms started in January this year, one month after she had her breast implants replaced because one ruptured. The former Ex On The Beach star said: "One day I started coughing up blood, which was incredibly scary.

"I know there is a lot of controversy around breast implant illness, but I was healthy before this rupture. I had the new ones put in and my health has been dropping until every bodily function has been attacked by my own system. The one thing that's changed is my breasts.

"My consultant said that there is a link between silicone and autoimmune diseases. Why else would my body start attacking itself?"

Jess has also talked of her experience on social media, and it led to three of the UK’s top plastic surgeons encouraging all women with implants to have their breasts screened to help to prevent ruptures and other complications. Implant Health brings the UK’s first national voluntary clinical screening to empower patients, and give them access to regular breast health screenings to detect early complications and health risks.

Mr Paul Harris said: "Complications, including capsular contractures, ruptures and movement can happen over time, because of either the implant itself or how the body has reacted to it. Unfortunately, these complications can go undetected for several years meaning they go untreated."

Mr Khan added: "Overall breast health is something that is taken very seriously, especially in patients who have undergone breast augmentation procedures who may require a personalised healthcare approach that monitors both breast and implant changes over time. Implant Health gives patients access to personalised breast health screenings, with only the very best surgeons, and radiologists to ensure the highest standards of excellence."
