Princess Diana Had the Sweetest Nickname for Prince William When He Was a Little Boy

There are plenty of conflicting opinions when it comes to Diana, Princess of Wales, but we can all agree on one essential truth: she loved her two sons fiercely. Critics questioned whether she loathed the press or used them to her advantage. But when it came to Prince William and Prince Harry, there’s a unanimous consensus that Diana cherished her role as a mother most of all.

And like so many other mothers, the Princess of Wales doted on her children and expressed her love for them through both her words and actions. For example, she had several sweet nicknames for her eldest, Prince William.

Most royal family members have nicknames

It’s true that Diana felt like an outsider in the royalfamily most of the time. But one way she fit in perfectly was with her use ofnicknames. Everyone from Queen Elizabeth to her children, grandchildren, andgreat-grandchildren have nicknames. And the one Diana had for William is sosweet.

According to a 2003 Vanity Fair profile, Diana used to call William “D.D.G.,” which stood for “Drop Dead Gorgeous.” Journalist Christopher Anderson reported that not only did Diana think her little boy was handsome, but she also believed he had a lot in common with another heartthrob — John F. Kennedy, Jr.

She even wanted their commonalities to extend beyond just good looks.

Apparently, Princess Diana wanted Prince William to be likeJFK, Jr.

“Diana, who was so keenly aware of her son’s cover-boypotential that she dubbed him D.D.G. (for Drop Dead Gorgeous), also saw theparallels with young Kennedy,” Andersen wrote. “Just two months before herdeath, she told friends that she hoped William would grow up to share Kennedy’smedia savvy.”

According to Andersen, Diana said, “I want William to beable to handle things as well as John [F. Kennedy, Jr.] does.”

Sadly, Diana didn’t realize that the man she idolized for her son’s future would die tragically a few years after she did. But the Duke of Cambridge did live up to those expectations his mother had of cultivating a decent relationship with the press.

Prince William had a few other cute nicknames

Besides Diana calling William D.D.G., she also called him Wombat, which William himself spoke about in a 2007 interview.

“It began when I was two. I’ve been rightfully told because I can’t remember back that far,” the Duke of Cambridge revealed. “But when we went to Australia with our parents, and the wombat, you know, that’s the local animal…So I just basically got called that. Not because I look like a wombat, or maybe I do.”

She was also known to refer to her eldest as Basher Wills for his wild tendencies, especially when he was a toddler. His cheeky personality during childhood also earned him descriptive monikers including “William the Terrible” and “my mini tornado,” as Express reported.

Ultimately, nicknames are a sign of affection and familiarity, proving that Princess Diana truly treasured her son and of course thought hewas drop dead gorgeous. But we already knew that.
