26 years ago (1997) We revealed the devastating aftermath of the Southall rail crash tragedy.
Seven people died and 139 were injured when an InterCity 125 train from Swansea to London Paddington ploughed into a freight train crossing its path.
An inquiry into the accident found the passenger train’s automatic warning system was disabled.
77 years ago (1946) The first Cannes Film Festival was held after being delayed for seven years during the Second World War.
The annual event got off to a shaky start after technical problems led to Alfred Hitchcock’s film Notorious being shown in reverse order and The Three Musketeers was projected upside-down.
45 years ago (1978) Police launched an investigation into the killing of paper boy Carl Bridgewater, 13, who was shot in the head at a farmhouse near Stourbridge, West Midlands.
In 1979 four men were convicted of his murder and served 18 years in prison before being freed by the Court of Appeal in 1997 after their original trial was ruled to be unfair.
