Woman shares brilliant hair hack to stop face masks hurting ears

This time last year, nobody could have guessed that face masks would be a wardrobe essential for 2020.

While face masks are a necessary precaution to prevent the spread of coronavirus (and germs in general), there’s no denying they can be incredibly uncomfortable to wear – especially for long periods of time.

But to combat this problem, a hair stylist has shared a simple hack which reduces discomfort.

Olivia Smalley – who calls herself the ‘Queen of Hair Hacks’ on Instagram – has posted an easy trick which requires just one item: a hair clip.

In her video, someone can be seen clipping back the elastic on her face mask with a stylish pearl hair clip.

The simple move takes the pressure off the ear and instead places it on the clip.

Her caption reads: ‘Mask Hack. Ears hurt? Grab a clip to hold back mask. And not to mention it looks so cute.’

Olivia’s post has now been liked more than 6,100 times, with many commenting on the brilliant technique.

One astounded follower replied: ‘That is so simple and so genius! I wear glasses and the combo kills my ears! Thank you for this fashionable yet comfortable solution.’

Another added:‘Functional and cuteeeee. Thank you for sharing.’

While someone else chipped in: ‘YOU ARE A GENIUSSSSS.’

Olivia, who works in the U.S. (so has gone back to work), tells Metro.co.uk: ‘Since going back into the salon, I’ve been wearing my mask for long periods of time and noticed how raw the back of my ears were getting.

‘I’ve toyed with different ways to protect my ears and it hit me to just let the barrette [clip] hold it in place for me.’

For anyone looking for face mask inspiration, there are a number of great ones online which are both fashionable and functional.
