So, it turns out that many of us have been washing our bedding incorrectly…
A new guide has shared the proper way to wash your bed linens to ensure you eliminate germs and allergens.
Guidelines, first shared on Reviewed, state you should never leave your sheets more than one to two weeks before washing.
This is because dead skin cells, dust mites, oil from your body and bacteria builds up on the fabric. Gross.
Luckily, it’s pretty easy to clean them correctly.
They'll smell great, look great and be healthier for your skin!
Here is the full cleaning routine:
- First, make sure you read the care label so you follow the guide for your specific fabric.
- Then, pre-treat any stains before washing – if you have a blood stain make sure you use cold water so you don’t set the proteins.
- Now, choose the cycle and temperature of your wash based on the care label. You can tweak it depending on how dirty the bedding is, such as using a heavy, hot cycle for removing oil.
- Make sure you don’t overload your machine as the fabric needs to move around to get scrubbed well.
- Oddly, the guide says not to use dryer sheets as they make fabric less absorbent. Dryer balls are useful as they stop the load from bunching together.
- Hang your sheets on a washing line outside every so often – the sunlight will disinfect them, make them smell fresh and can bleach out stains.
- Iron your sheets to kill any remaining use mites and bacteria.
Follow these rules and your sheets will smell great and be properly clean.
However, if you live in an area with a lot of pollution don’t dry your bedding outside to often as this can get on the sheets.
