BGT finalist and Gary Barlow team up for fight to become Christmas Number One
Britain's Got Talent runner-up Tom Ball has teamed up with Take That legend Gary Barlow to release a new Christmas song.
The singing school teacher appeared on the ITV talent competition in 2022 and earlier this year he was a finalist on spin-off show America's Got Talent All-Stars. However,
He said: "I signed a record contract eight months ago with Westway Music and from that moment the record label and my management put together some writing sessions. So I was lucky to work with some incredible people including Elliot Kennedy. He wrote Finding Neverland with Gary Barlow, he’s done a lot for musicals also. I went to the studio several times to write with Elliot, and one of those times I was sitting in the studio and he said to me, “Can I play you a song?” I said, “Do, please, absolutely I’d love to hear a song.” He played me Winter Song.” He asked, “Would you like to do something with it?”

"At that time I had no idea it was written by Gary until I said yes and Elliot then said that’s a song written by me and Gary Barlow. I went back to the studio couple of weeks later and did a demo version with Elliot in the studio, played around a little bit, and I absolutely fell in love with it. It’s a beautiful track.
"I think Gary and Elliot had done an incredible job writing the song, it’s a really beautiful song and it captivates Christmas for me anyway. The lyrics and the narrative that the song has really ‘spoken’ to me about what I value in Christmas, you spend time with your family and the season. I showed it to the label and I showed it to my management and they loved it as well. I’m really excited about it I think it’s great."
Tom went on to reveal that Gary has had an influence in his music career from a young age. "When I was growing up I listened to loads of music. My mum showed my everything from the 70s, 80s, 90s,, and one of my big influences were Take That. I used to listen to Take That all the time. In fact, I use to sing along to Take That on the Nintendo Wii, it was a game called Take That Sing Star. You have a microphone and you sing along with Take That – the whole game was about Take That.
"Me and my sister used to do that every single day. I used to sing Gary’s parts I loved it. Obviously Gary is also a musical theatre writer and has had a massive influence on me. I adore musical theatre. Gary was literally playing in my household when I was growing up. I adore him, his writing and his music. The interaction I’ve had with Gary I found him very positive. He’s an incredible human, he’s generous with his time, absolutely a genius."
Winter Song is set to be released on December 8 and Tom says the festive track is a "cross between musical theatre and a incredible power ballad". He saidL It’s beautifully written song with a narrative that encapsulates the magic and everything I love about Christmas. I describe it as an epic tune, with beautiful backing vocals from a choir that builds throughout the song. Many fans of mine can expect it’s a cross between musical theatre and a incredible power ballad.
