Freddie Flintoff horror crash details emerge as Top Gear future in doubt

Details of the horror crash which left Top Gear host Freddie Flintoff with serious injuries have emerged, which left the future of the car show "in serious doubt".

The sporting legend was left with facial injuries and broken ribs and was airlifted to hospital after the freak accident during filming.

The 45-year-old was injured alongside a crew member and details of the crash – which happened at Dunsfold Aerodrome in Surrey in December – have now emerged.

"It was a freak accident and somehow the car flipped over and the two men were dragged along," a source said.

"Freddie and the crew member were both wearing helmets, but it was still a severe accident."

The TV insider added to The Sun: "Everyone on the scene was shocked by how serious it was and they were very worried about the two men strapped in."

Telly bosses are reportedly keen to keep too many details of the crash from coming out, but production on Top Gear has stopped while Freddie and the crew member recover.

The source added: "No-one is rushing back to work any time soon. The future of the show is in serious doubt."

Unsurprisingly, Freddie has suspended work on all of his current projects while he recovers from his injuries.

And it has been reported that Top Gear will not return this year.

The show is no stranger to accidents, with former host Richard Hammond, 53, left in a two-week coma after a crash back in 2006.

Hammond lost control of a £2million supercar in Switzerland and was left with a frontal lobe brain injury.

He also had a dragster crash and was left with another brain injury, but was out of bed and walking just 30 hours later.

Hammond later revealed that he entered a child-like state and became obsessed with Lego and card game Top Trumps during his recovery from the crash.
